Lifespan

What is the lifespan of a chimpanzee?

Any chimpanzee above the age of 30 is considered geriatric. Therefore, all of the residents at CSNW are considered geriatric!

In the wild, the life expectancy of chimpanzees is 33 years, but on rare occasions, some live into their 60’s.  In captivity, chimpanzees can sometimes live into their 60’s and 70’s (although rare). Heart disease is the leading causes of death in captive populations. Female chimpanzees typically live longer than male chimpanzees, as males are more prone to heart conditions. Captive female chimpanzees are more prone to renal failure.

I will reference the article I used here.

Dang, look at Gordito sitting on the stairs, looking like he’s waiting to ask you to prom!

Yes, our friends who live at the Sanctuary are elderly. Every day I am grateful that they are still

living and being treated with intelligent compassion and care by their caregivers. As I treasure the memory of our dear Jody, so too do I cherish the residents of the Sanctuary in the present. L’chaim.

Thank you, Tobin — To Life!! In all its many forms…I’m so grateful for this amazing community that supports the chimps and their talented, loving caregivers in so many ways.

Tobin, INTELLIGENT COMPASSION is an especially apt discription of the care CSNW residents recieve daily. Thank you.

This is interesting. Orangutans and gorillas are considered geriatric at 40.
I will have to look up what is considered geriatric for bonobos!

    I agree with Tobin.

I didn’t realize Annie was 49! Beautiful Annie will be 50 next year. How can this be?! May everyone be healthy and live a long life. I am hoping those morning smoothies are made from the fountain of youth!

What amazes me about chimps is the fact that – unlike most humans – they don’t lose their playfulness with age and are always ready to explore new things and ways for their shenaningans!
