A small miracle
October 13, 2017 by J.B. -
Nearly ten years ago, we met these chimpanzees in the windowless basement of a laboratory where they had lived for decades, often alone. Each walk around Young’s Hill still feels like a small miracle.

Their presence of the Cle Elum Seven on Young’s Hill is a miracle, for they, too, are miracles. Blessed are those who rescue such captives and bring them back into their birthright: Life.
We’ll never forget the project and the first introduction of the chimps to the hill. Look at how far they have come from that basement room, how secure they have become and how free they are to explore the ever changing hill. It is such a beautifully wild and natural place with nature all ariund them. The hill is the gift that keeps giving. Thank God they are there.
Each walk around Young’s Hill IS a small miracle. To see Jamie, Foxie and Dora (?) and Burrito stroll the perimeter with confidence and playfulness is an extraordinary event. It may be a daily occurrence but not something we can ever take for granted. What must it all feel like for them?! The thought brings tears to my eyes — as did this beautiful little video. These chimp people are a family in every sense of the word, it is so apparent and this too brings tears to my eyes!
Yes, Karen and Don, Young’s Hill is the gift that keeps on giving. (Thank you!)! It gives to me, great joy, every time I see the chimps out on their Hill. I have had the incredible pleasure of visiting and seeing Young’s Hill and I will never forget it. Young’s Hill left me with an appreciation of the beauty that is Cle Elum, WA as well as deep understanding of what Sanctuary really is. It truly is HOME.
So lovely to see them working as a family
cheers for miracles! and gratitude for being able to be a part of their family. sending [safe, internet] hugs and kisses to you all!
I love this! Seeing them walk out in a group (was Negra at home wrapped in a blanket, or is it Missy? I keep forgetting which of them loves comfy). Seeing Jamie lead and turn to check on her family. Seeing Jamie walk backwards for so long, watching her family. Foxie extending her arm to give Jamie her doll. Awesome post.
A miracle indeed. But so are the people that rescued them and gave them such an amazing, safe home.
