First snow

Today is the first truly snowy day of the season.  This morning, as we were getting ready to let the chimpanzees out onto Young’s Hill, Jody gazed out the window longingly while food grunting (snow is a delicacy for the Cle Elum Seven).  Nobody has ventured too far outside yet – I guess even delicious snow isn’t worth freezing feet – but they’ve been spending the morning standing at the door to Young’s Hill and reaching outside for a handful to enjoy in the relative warmth of the greenhouse.

Just when we think we have see the photo of all photos, you send even better ones. These are adorable. To think that chimps like to eat snow is amazing for rain forest apes. Maybe you need to put them all in snow booties!!! Hope the snow melts so they can enjoy the hill a little longer. Thanks for the wonderful photos and comments. We love receiving them and are, of course, mad about these 7 chimps! They are all so interesting in totally different ways!

We do have a holiday card made each year that we send to donors in December. I believe this year’s features Foxie and some troll dolls on a snowy Young’s Hill. 🙂

I notice mostly lip action with the snow – do some of them have teeth that are sensitive to cold like humans? (I get chills just thinking about chewing ice!) Have any of them ever exhibited a facial expression akin to a brain freeze if they eat cold too quickly?

Negra often experiences what appears to be brain freeze when she eats frozen bananas. After a few bites she puts down the banana, stands up, and paces quickly back and forth for a minute, then resumes her eating.
