A wintry perk

Like many humans, chimpanzees generally prefer warmer temperatures. For that reason, winter is not much fun for the Cle Elum Seven, but there is one big consolation: they are treated to an all-you-can-eat snow buffet.

enjoyed missy’s little hustle off at the end …
I am so happy to know that the chimps have a greenhouse to enjoy through the winter!
And I really enjoy the delicacy and finesse with which those very, very strong hands grasp things. 🙂
Have you guys thought about teaching them how to make snowballs as an enrichment? I bet that they would love that.
Anastasia – We have demonstrated snowball-making for the chimpanzees before, and we’ve built (or attempted to build) a small snowman for them. In general, they seem much more interested in eating the snow than in playing with it.
in burrito’s little bit getting snow out of the pool, the hair on his arms is all fluffed up … guess he had recently had a puff daddy moment … btw, love the idea anastasia of teaching the chimpsters how to make and use snowballs …
Most enjoyable. Love watching the Chlimps taking part in all the activities you come up with. They must just love getting up every morning to something different.
Hilarious!
aw i loved this clip !esp Missy creeping off with her spoils ! do the chimps seem surprised when the snow melts i wonder ?
Not that I’ve noticed, Marie. They’ve had lots of experience with ice and snow — I think they’ve got it figured out. 😉
They do enjoy the snow. Have you thought of sprinkling Gatorade powder in it for a change of pace? The chimps at Knoxville Zoo loved snow Gatorade!
That’s a great idea, Theresa! We try not to give the chimps added sugar, but we’ll have to experiment with a sugar-free version.
