Wood Wool Forage and More!

Providing enrichment opportunities for the chimps and watching them enjoy the experience is truly a rewarding part of our job. Today we put out peanut butter frisbees, which is a favorite among Negra’s group. Surprisingly, Jamie shared this food puzzle with everyone including Foxie! After cleaning the playroom we noticed we had a lot of leftover wood wool. We decided to put the wood wool out in the green house and put out seeds in the wood wool for the chimps to search for. Watching them problem solve and find different tactics to engage with their enrichment always motivates us to keep creating more ways to enrich them throughout the day. Overall, making enrichment for chimpanzees is not only fun, but also deeply enriching for both chimpanzees and their caregivers.

Don’t forget to test your knowledge of chimpanzees and other primates!

Congratulations on creating an, ingenious, enrichment with the, wood, wool and seeds! Not only is it rewarding for them, but, time consuming, so, it gives them a, long, experience. May I suggest adding some nuts?

How far out did Negra go today?

Yay, Neggie outside! Before March, even! Good to hear.

Kelsi, I was going to comment when I saw the video a couple of hours ago that I liked that you made more than 1 pile of wood wool, in case “a certain someone” tried to hog it all (but then you came out here and named names!)

Are the Californians no longer getting peanut butter Frisbees bc of the chewers?

The wood wool makes for a challenging forage! That must keep them busy for long time. I’d never heard of wood wool until your blog, I can see why it’s also fun for nesting as well. So cool.

And do I even need to say how much I enjoyed seeing Neggie and Foxie working their peanut butter frisbees?! I see both ladies have their own techniques. Thank you for this sweet video and all the bonus photos. I always love your closeups of Jamie. Goofy Foxie, silly and young at heart.

How generous of Jamie sharing the food puzzle! I love the lengths you go to in creating enrichment games which catch the chimps’ attention. I loved the photos and the look of expectation on Negra’s sweet face ready to explore her outside world. Thanks for sharing these delights.

It’s so wonderful to see everyone engaged and working on the enrichment. I’m glad Jamie decided to show her generous side and let everybody have some! Also those pictures of everyone just made my day.
