Honey B Takes a Trip to the Clinic

Yesterday was a very busy day at the sanctuary. There was a fight in Honey B’s group in the afternoon where she sustained a multilayered laceration to her lower right eyelid. Thankfully there was no damage to the eye itself, but the injury did require some stitches. Everyone quickly jumped into action to get Honey B prepared for her sedation. Dr. Erin was already onsite and the process was started right away. Honey B did well under anesthesia and was returned to a cozy room with blanket nests lovingly prepared for her by Kelsi, and socks on her feet to make sure she didn’t get cold. She has spent most of today resting after her eventful day yesterday and will stay separated from her group for several days to allow us to better monitor her healing.

Oh, poor baby “get well soon, Honey B”. Thank God the eye was not damaged and thankfully Dr Erin was on hand and helped save the day.Do you know how the fight started? I know flare ups can and do happen but hopefully peace and friendships will soon be restored.
Oh HONEY……Not every Male has to be put in his Place!…..That’s What Cy is for…..:worried: Watch movies and Maybe they’ll throw a little Pasta your Way….I hope her injury is Tender enough ,that she keeps those stitches alone:pensive:
Aww, Honey B! Hope you feel well and i know you are getting extra love from your caregivers.
This brings up a question I’ve had for a while. When something like this happens, how do you separate Honey B and then prepare her for sedation? I’m assuming she has to be sedated before she is removed from where she is being isolated. I have a cat (think Barn Kitty) that I have to dope up with a muscle relaxer in his canned food before I can get him into the carrier to go to the vet and he is much less dangerous than a chimpanzee. So it makes me wonder how you do that.

First of all, thank you so much for keeping us informed about Honey B’s injury and the steps you have taken to make certain everything is as well as it can be in her recovery. I am sorry all of that happened, but that is a chimp’s life isn’t it. I hope that she is resting well and that her group, who I know is aware of this upheaval, will be welcoming her back in a few days. You are remarkable people who take remarkable care of a remarkable group of primates. Best wishes for the weekend to everyone. And to my HOOT fruend Nancy D, you know your girlfriend Honey B is in good habds and will soon be up and basck to her Honey B shenanigans.

Is the alpha supposed to keep these fights under control so no one gets hurt?
A strong alpha does provide stability to a group but they can’t stop all fights. Injuries occur in all groups but groups that have been recently formed (<2 years) or groups without a strong alpha will likely experience more conflicts and injuries.
So glad it was minor. Loved all the love and attention she got before and during, and especially after, with so many of you surrounding her outside her recovery room. Honey B being Honey B, I’m sure she’ll be back up and ready for more very soon. Thank you all for all you do, and yes, thank you, too, for letting us know right away.

Sorry to learn about H.B. With her strength, I speculate that her prognosis is favorable. I trust that grooming sessions have been called by Maeve and Cy to restore the domestic tranquility.
Makes me feel so good knowing she is so loved and surrounded by her caregivers. Speedy recovery Miss B!!
So sorry to hear about Honey B. Hope she will be better and better each day until she is back with her family again. Thank you for taking such good care of her.

Poor Honey B! Luckily nothing happened to her eye, but clearly came dangerously close. I know she’s in good hands…. many good hands. Hope she feels better soon.
