The Cattle Apple Saddle

Please join Betsy, Honey, Meredith, and Nutmeg for lunch! During the colder months, we supplement the cattle’s diet with grass hay, oat hay, and alfalfa. During the warmer months, other than the cattle’s other supplements that we provide, caregivers generally allow the cattle to roam and graze on whatever their hearts desire. In this video, Nutmeg and Meredith are eating some apples from the apple tree in their pasture, Betsy is munching on some willow near the pond, and Honey was just getting done grazing on some grass.

Here are some bonus photos from today!

With the weather holding out with temperate conditions, Negra’s group had a nice lunch forage on Young’s Hill.

Recently, we added Sprout Pencils to our Amazon Wish List as a new type of enrichment. These pencils have a capsule full of seeds where the eraser is supposed to be. When you are done with them, you can plant the pencil and different types of plants are supposed to grow. There are still some on the Wish List if you would like to help us stockpile some of them for the chimps!

Seriously, how lucky are these cattle to have the shade of a tree and be able to eat apples straight off the same tree!!!
I will tell you now, you wouldnt see that in Australia, where you see one gum tree in a huge paddock full of animals, all struggling to get shade in the hot hot summer sun.

As I watched it, Chad, I thought, “someone was really enjoying a beautiful day of work up there, and decided to share it with us”. Jersey cow ASMR!

But how DARE they eat the Boss’s apples!?

Someone at a riding stable once told me (as I shared the apple I’d brought between my horse and my friend’s) that if they eat too many apples, they can get “drunk”. Is it the same with cows?

Anything that ferments can get you drunk that’s when it’s at its best:grin:

I did a little investigation Linda this is what I found…..Although partly fermented apples probably aren’t on your list of favorite foods, cows enjoy them and reap their rewards. These include aiding digestion and regulating the stomach’s acidity. Feeding a few half-fermented apples to your cow can be beneficial.May 23, 2023

Thanks, I looked it up. tlThese aren’t the fermented ones on the ground, though, they’re the ones that are still on the trees. Too many of those could cause colic

Finally! I finally heard Annie’s bird sounds clearly! Scrolled back to the Nov 2010 newsletter to do it. But now I’m happy and the cows are happy and it’s a GOOD day!

What a beautiful video and lovely to watch and hear the “bovines” literally enjoying their gorgeous day in the sunshine. It made me feel I was there with you all. Fabulous photos also of the chimps having a ball. Thank you!

Wonderful video and photos as always, Chad. I often look back at Nutmeg’s baby photo to remind myself how tiny he was! What a perfect life they now have.
Is Jamie writing her life story do you think? It’s sure to be a best seller.

Great idea, Chad, to let us join in on a bovine luncheon. I think Nutmeg needs one of the chimps stepping-stool-tables to get up to the remaining apples! Looks as if everyone had fun dining al fresco today, cows and chimps. Especially Neggie and Missy with their mouths stuffed with carrots. And Jamie documenting the days forage, just what one would expect a good boss to do.

How do the chimps percive the cattle and various other beings around the place? Are they used to them and just ignore them, especially the cat, i would imagine one or two of the chimps would probably either get a scare or would shout out. But, overall i think its wonderful that all are given a choice to do what they wish, with just a tiny bit of guidence.

Jamie throws dirt at them, so that they know who’s boss .
And Cy is scared of pics of Nutmeg. I’m interested to hear if he’s met him “in person”
