I had no idea what today’s blog was going to consist of, then I caught Annie starting to build a nest and I just knew it was going to be something I should capture. Enjoy her nest building with some guest appearances by Annie’s special bird noises.

I recently discovered your YouTube channel and enjoy watching the chimps, I love them so. A little sad to see them in captivity, but it is what it is. I am supposing it is because they are older and I know they are stronger than humans and safety for caregivers is paramount. I’m supporting your organization as much as I can. God Bless everyone there. Oh, just watching Jamie playing the ukulele! She’s good! 🙂 I am sending a donation in the hopes it goes toward enrichment activity supplies.

      Hi Evelina!
We, too, dream of a day that great apes don’t have to be in captivity. Unfortunately, our fifteen chimpanzee residents were apart of the biomedical research industry and don’t have the skill-sets to go into the wild. However, we do our best to provide them enriching lives here! Thank you so much for your donation!

I love Annie, beautiful, beautiful Annie and her soft bird calls. What a colorful nest! And it never once dawned on me that chimpanzees blow their noses. But of course they do! This cracked me up. If your spring is like the one I’ve experienced with tree pollen off the roof and smoke from the fires in Canada blowing smoke and particles our way, and all of it causing the worst allergy season ever, it makes perfect sense Annie would need to clear her head out. Or maybe it’s the freshly cut grass getting to her.

So, now that you and Annie educated me on nose blowing, I have to ask…..do some chimpanzees suffer from seasonal allergies like people do?

Thanks for the video and the bonus photos of Lucky and the boys hanging on the Bray! So fantastic!

I think some of them do suffer from seasonal allergies from time to time! Thank you Kathleen for your lovely comment!

Thank you so much for highlighting Annie today. I’d like to get to know her better. I enjoyed the video of just her. Videos are better than still shots to capture a personality. That few moments with just you and her conveyed a lot. She can be silly, teasing, funny, affectionate, altogether sweet.

Sadly I learned so much more about Jody after her passing. I dont want that to be the case with anyone else.

    Thank you Jenna

oh, and I can’t get enough of the Bray goings on. I’m soooo proud of Willy B, and Lucky too. Man, Cy is a BIG guy isn’t he ??

Awh, Paulette! Thank you for your comment. Annie is the sweetest, gentle gal. I think this video highlighted just that! I’m going to keep your comment in mind for my future blog posts… to highlight their personalities as much as possible.

this is my time of the year to be taking antihistamines…does she have an annual spring issue…?

Annie has come so far since the hesitant girl who relied on her best buddy for confidence. She’s beautiful. Was it Annie who was distressed at saying goodbye to Jody….waving her arms and a fear face?

    • Avatar Linda C on June 2, 2023 at 7:30 pm

She was the one rocking and lifting her arms, yes

Never enough of sweet Annie and her beautiful hands!
She was stealing Neggie’s blankets, wasn’t she?
The greenhouse was so still and quiet! Where was everyone!?
    Thanks, Jenna!

What a beautiful video of sweet Annie! I noticed her little toy on her thigh but she then decided to make herself more comfortable. It made me feel quite sleepy and it’s good to know Annie and her pals have the best of everything I wonderif she missed her son Virgil living at the Florida sanctuary. Was he taken from Annie at birth?
Thanks again for sharing the video and keeping us in the loop (I am one of Annie’s chimp pals). Bless you all.

Thank you Jenna I so enjoyed this video of beautiful Annie relaxing in her comfy nest. I loved that you talked to her and said her name. I don’t notice that much in the videos and I was wondering if caregivers do that but I loved hearing it. thank you so much for sharing this special moment between the two of you:) and the photos from the Bray are awesome too!

    • Avatar Linda C on June 3, 2023 at 8:13 am

I think they do it a lot, as they would with people. we just don’t always hear it on the videos bc of music or because they want us to enjoy rhe sounds of sanctuary. Witness the video where JB asked Joe to get some blankets out of the doorway so that he could close the doors and clean, and he uses please and thank you as well

    • Avatar Jenna on June 3, 2023 at 8:51 am

We talk to them all the time! We all hate hearing our voices on videos, however, so it usually doesnt make the cut! :joy:

Watching Annie made me drowsy just seeing her settling in with her well-chosen nest items. Thank you, Jenna! I love hearing the voices of the caregivers on these videos so I hope you encourage your compadres to include their vocals more! I can’t be there myself to coo & oooh & ahhh or ask the chimps to move their blankets so the door can be closed (a la JB), but hearing you all interacting is really charming. Pics from the Bray are wonderful, esp seeing Willy B enjoying himself with buddies outside.
