The Dreamy Mezzanine

In the winter, the Mezzanine is the coziest place to hang out with the chimpanzees. The upstairs Mezzanine is the only part of the sanctuary where humans can easily access the second floor for interactions with the chimps and it’s toasty warm up there. If you are missing a caregiver in the afternoon after the cleaning is done, there’s a good chance they are sitting upstairs on the heated floors next to one of their good friends.

This afternoon as I hunted for blog content, I found the majority of Cy’s group lounging in the Mezzanine. Here are 2 particularly dreamy looking people…

    Hi, Anna!
I’m getting better! I identified the top pic as Lucky before I scrolled down! And those last two pics made it clear how their noses and upper lips are different. Thanks!

I’m still less good about knowing who’s who among the new group than Jamie’s/Burrito’s/et al’s group but I’m getting better. Some of their distinguishing characteristics remain subtle to me and then voila! all of a sudden I can better recognize them individually. When a chimp grooms a human do we think it means they’ve accepted the human as part of their group? I’d assume so, but thought to ask. A gesture of affection and acceptance?

Hi Anna! I wish I had a cozy warm mezzanine to hang out in. Especially if it had this good looking crew to interact with! Thanks for closeups of Lucky and Rayne.

Cozy, warm floors in the Pacific Northwest!! I’ll move from Portland. Say the word and I’m so there. Thank you for all you do to give the chimps their best life. And, I guess staff too.
