Many thanks to Pamela Roberson for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in honor of dear friend of the sanctuary, Marya Barey!

“In honor of Marya Barey; friendship, compassion, and the Ugandan chimp stolen from his mother who gently groomed my fingernails while crossing Turkey 1972 – a feeling imprinted in my mind and heart to this day.”

Pamela thank you for choosing to celebrate Marya in this way and choosing to make a difference in the lives of the chimpanzees.

Marya, we are so happy to have the opportunity to celebrate you and your wonderful heart! You help make so much possible in the chimpanzees’ lives and we’re immensely grateful to you. Have a beautiful day!

Thank you, Linda. I’m grateful to Pam for this lovely gift for the sanctuary and for all who contribute to the chimps’ ongoing enrichment and welfare.

I’ve noticed these several times before, but have never asked. Are those cushions of some sort that Negra is napping on?

Hi Michele, Negra’s nesting on the top level of the greenhouse where it gets super warm and those are just the ends of the platform boards I think you’re asking about. So just under her are the first two levels of the platform in her group’s greenhouse which are commonly shown in videos, especially during parties. If you’ve ever seen them climbing up a short ladder from those, that’s where she was in this photo. 🙂

Thank you, Pam, for your sponsorship and for your own connection to chimps and your open-hearted connection to nature in all Her forms. I’m grateful for this community and for all the love and efforts that go into making the chimps’ lives as restful, enjoyable, satisfying and growthful as possible. Pant-hoots for all!

Poor Negra. She doesn’t look well or happy, and hasn’t for awhile. Someone mentioned her arthritis, which I had missed. Then I saw her moving, with the camera focused on her hip and leg. Again, poor Negra. I assume she’s getting all the help that might ease her pain. ((((HUGS)))) and my heart are all I can offer her, I think.

I think that’s just her “I’m not awake yet” face. And remember, these are recycled pics.
But let’s face it. Chimps in captivity live to anywhere between 50-60. She’s approaching 50. While I hope we get to keep her around for a while, we do have to come to terms with the fact thst eventually, they will pass. (And Foxie and Burrito also have arthritis, but Neggie has never been known to be a powerhouse of energy). That’s why I’m always happy to hear “Negra was the first one out the door today.” And that still happens now and then (althouh I don’t expect it until springnow ).

The whole point of sanctuary is allowing them to choose how they spend their days. And if an old girl with tired old bones finds that the sheets are stuck to her (or I think we say in English, calling her), why, that’s her right.
