Skips Don’t Lie

Wherever, whenever, Gordo’s ready to play chase together.

The playful “bunny hop” that Gordo performs during games of chase is perfection. The hop has been mentioned on the blog before (1, 2, 3), but I wanted to share some additional video clips so you all could see Gordo’s iconic moves up close.

Gordo has some “wallflower” tendencies; it’s not unusual for him to hang out at the group’s periphery when he wants some quiet time. Despite this aloof nature, we’ve discovered that Gordo can be coaxed into goofing around by his companions and caregivers. This gradual process begins with him sitting as stoically as possible, gazing back as we make playful gestures in his direction. Gordo’s poker face slowly begins to crack with anticipation; he often tips his hand by scratching his torso or letting out an anxious yawn. Suddenly, he bursts forward with a dramatic “bunny hop”, launching himself into a rowdy game of chase.

Instead of sprinting gracefully, however, Gordo tends to lackadaisically skip from one corner of the room to the other. He looks back at us, we pursue, and the dance goes on until one (or both) of us get winded.

Hop. Skip. Repeat.

Lol, saw the video on YT, saw the title, knew Anthony was on deck!

So nice that the formerly elusive Gordito has come out of his shell!
    Thanks for the video!
(until today, as you probably heard from your folks, it’s been 60s-70- here)

Thanks for this enjoyable posting, Anthony! I adore those bunny hops and for some reason (yeah, right!!) I can’t prevent myself from giggling when I see him doing it. There was a posting a few months ago that clearly showed him bunny hopping among the others who were also chasing around & it was so charming. But I think it was only Gordo who was hopping like that. Talk about playful! I’m so happy he has a life that suppports him in all his wonderful ways.

I feel like Mave does it, too, but we don’t see it as often. Now we need to see the funny skip that Katelyn says Burrito does

How wonderful. Such a silly chap. I love his face. It always looks as if Gordo has a little smile on his face (and perhaps a wee underbite).

Anthony, just how much do you honestly have with this dear fellow?

As Lynn said above, my heart just melts for Gordo who I think is feeling safe and secure and confident in his surroundings and with his new human family and new chimp friends. We all take measure when meeting new people or in unfamiliar places, and act accordingly. It takes a bit for that measure. And when it is right for us, then we can be our true selves. That’s our dear Gordo. And I have so much respect and gratitude and love for CSNW for providing the best possible world for him and all of the others to thrive.
