Well, we have some exciting news! I am not sure if anyone picked up on Anthony or Chad’s very subtle hints, but today Jamie’s group received access back to the new and improved Young’s Hill! For those who might be wondering about Cy’s group, the Bray Hill isn’t quite ready yet.

This afternoon, watching the seven go back out into their outdoor enclosure was a spectacular event to witness! I will share a few highlights of the day and tomorrow JB will have a video with more details to share!

Annie trying out new structures:

Burrito exploring:

Fearless little Foxie:

Missy and Annie inspecting:

Jody:

Jody and Foxie checking out their new structure:

Chad took this photo of Jamie. To me, this photo is the epitome of sanctuary:

Also this photo of Jamie, she looks so happy:

Maybe one of the best highlights of the day is Missy being the first to climb the trees! We humans and probably Jo were all holding our breath, but also so excited to watch Missy agilely climb a tree for the first time EVER!!!

Jody watching Missy climb a tree:

Jody and Annie monitoring Missy closely from the ground:

“Here I sit beneath a tree. Heartbeat calm. Soul hums free.”

What wonderful photographs of a historical occasion the Sanctuary, and a momentuous day for Jamie and her troop! It only took her 47 years, but, at last, Missy finally climbed a tree.

On behalf of our friends, thank you so much, all who created this new venue.

What a joyful day, Hooray! Of course, it would have to be our little athlete Missy who did the first climb, but all of them look supremely happy. I can just imagine their conversations before settling down to a good sleep and sweet dreams of more adventures to come. Well done and millions of thanks to all of you that made this happen.

Oh, thank you, Kelsi! (and Chad for the photos)
I had my money on Annie climbing a structure to the top (go, Annie. go!), but I had forgotten the TREES! Seeing Jo’s happy face and Jamie all pilo–what a treat!

Such an exciting day! missy in the tree was too great for words!!! True sanctuary!! I am so excited for when Cy’s group can go out!!! oh the joy! I really think Cy and his 6 will readily go out since they had a few unplanned outings (yikes) in the past! Maybe they will encourage mave and Honey to venture out?!?!? Either way there will be choice and that is always a good thing!!!

    • Avatar Linda C on October 19, 2022 at 8:33 pm

Oh, that sounds like a good story, Deanna! However did you get them back in!?

  13. Avatar Kathleen on October 19, 2022 at 8:12 pm

Did you all burst with joy when everyone wandered out?!! What an exciting day!

Where’s Negra? Did she venture outside? Oh! That photo of Jamie, it’s a perfect stamp for the day. And I just love the photos (and the quote) of Jody and Annie at the base of the TREE with Missy up near the tippy top! Monumental moment for the CSNW history book.

Now I have to ask, did Missy make it down as easily as she went up? I am sure she did, and only ask because I remember one of the Fauna chimps dashing outside on his first excursion out, he charged up a tree and stayed there all day (and maybe all night too?!) because he couldn’t quite figure out how to get down! And ohhh, do you think Missy might actually build a real nest within the treetops one day?! My head explodes with all the possibilities!!!!

Congratulations everyone on successfully creating this new outside enclosure. Hugs to each and every one of you.

Great news. Bravo Missy, for showing the world that freedom and free will is wonderful to have for all chimps.

Chimp in a tree! Wonderfull! Do chimps eat pine needles?

  17. Avatar Nancy Duryea on October 19, 2022 at 11:10 pm

Missy climbing a tree, crying time again for me! I wonder which one will be next! Wondrous picture of Jamie, her look says it all. I must thank you all again for everything you do daily for our loveable 16 chimpanzees.

I just looked at the picture of Jody watching Missy, she looks so happy, she must have thought to herself “what the hay”?

I just want to say that I agree with all the bloggers….Wonderful job and how exciting to see little Missy in the almost top of a pine tree….she must be practicing to be the angel in the top of coming Christmastree…..

This! This! is what Sanctuary is all about! When I think about the beginning, about the cage, and now, today, this! If we aren’t all in tears I don’t know why. Many thanks to all who made this possible, from staff to volunteers to donors to construction crews to everyone who dreamed sanctuary was possible, riht down to Jane Goodall herself. Thank you!
