To end Pride month, the chimps got some wild roses and lilac flowers as browse 🙂

Chomping flowers like potato chips…. No dip? I’ve never tried flowers myself. Dora seemed unsure about them. or maybe just not the ones she picked, or maybe she has tea party manners.

Dora most certainly does have tea party manners! Gordo and her come from a distinguished pedigree (as do the other 14 chimpanzees and four bovines).
That felt like a tropical vacation.
This post was offensive. Pride month has nothing to do with chimpanzees. Sorry you used these innocent souls in this way.
What does it matter? They had different experiences and treats..and lots of color! Compared to what they were
living in, (and I saw them in person) this was a real step up! Be happy for them!!

I understand your point of view. I see it as the staff celebrating Pride month and I appreciate the recognition knowing they mean no disrespect. But, now that I think about it, prejudiced and bigotry and laws against those who society has deemed “different”, should never be accepted or tolerated in any form. Judging any living being as “less than” is unacceptable. These 16 chimpanzees and even the four bovines spent the start of their lives being treated as less than. Equality means equality for all. Thankfully these chimpanzees are living a life where they are seen as “equal to” the humans who care for them and all of us who support their futures.
The mission of Pride month is not lost on this celebration but enhanced. After the all big celebrations on June 28th, this beautiful post made me reflect one more time on how far the fight has come and how quickly it could be lost.

Yes, thank you Kathleen and the others for your supportive and positive responses. No offense need be taken. – the 16 are cared for in the best way possible so that they can be their true selves. Seems in line with theme. We all celebrate their lives with them every day of the year.
It is true: Everyone deserves love. I am proud of the residents of the Sanctuary for their resilience, and proud of the mission of this Sanctuary and the great workers who provide such thoughtful and compassionate care to all of the non-human animals who live there. And, as always, Rayne is as bright and beautiful as a raynebow.

At its core the Pride movement is about equality, dignity, affirmation of basic rights and is against repression in any form no matter what one’s identification. These chimps cannot be returned to the wild to live out their “true” lives so the dignity and freedom they have in sanctuaries like CSNW provides them the best lives possible. They have the freedom to develop their true selves, associate with those they wish to, have basic dignity of being treated with respect for who each intrinsically is, and are able to become their best selves under the limitations of their circumstances. In other words, to thrive. I am in agreement with Tobin– I also feel pride for their resilience, the personal dignity each continues to develop within a supportive, loving, respectful and compassionate environment. Each is appreciated and valued, encouraged and nurtured to continue deepening their emergence as individuals. I’m unspeakably grateful for the entire community who support, love and care for these precious souls.
