Micro/Macro: The Sequel

Today’s post is a sequel to a blog entry I penned back in October: Micro/Macro.

In case you’re short for time or simply don’t want to delve back into the archives, I’ll briefly summarize the first post with this TL;DR (“too long; didn’t read”):

Macro photography is the practice of photographing objects so they are magnified at a ratio larger than 1:1. It’s good for taking pictures of small subjects or zooming in on select portions of larger things. I personally rented a versatile macro lens for my Nikon camera (they call theirs a “micro” lens) and used it to take close-ups of the chimps. Some of these images turned out nice.

Well, it probably won’t surprise you to know that I eventually purchased the micro lens for myself (partially because I’m committed to improving my skills and partially because I’m a helpless sucker for Cyber Monday deals on new tech gear).

The lens arrived on Christmas Eve and I immediately brought it to the sanctuary the next day. Some of the chimps were once again patient enough to model for me as I reacquainted myself with the new glass. Half-sisters Honey B and Lucky were extremely interested in the lens and kindly tolerated my company as they relaxed in their indoor areas, resulting in the following photos:

Honey B and the Balls of Doom!

So, so beautiful! The portrait of Lucky is my particular favorite. Just wonderful.

      Thanks, Mary!

I zoomed in on Honey B’s eyeball, and there was you Anthony!

that last picture of lucky is beautiful. I’ve said before that I love the color of the walls in the new wings. As shown here, I love the black and white of the chimps against that backdrop.

Thanks, Paulette! Someone else pointed out that it was actually Lucky’s eyeball in that frame, so I stand corrected. 🙂

The shades of teal and light blue in that wing are incredible! One of our volunteers is an artist and picked out the color palette, then JB and a few other volunteers did the painting! It looks so good in there.

Ohhh, Anthony! I certainly do recall the wonderful macro/micro shots you took a while back, and these are also just delightful. I have a thing about the chimps’ hands and toes and these pics are just perfect. I even took a shot w/ my phone of the ones in this posting so I can pull them up wherever I am! Thank you for your expertise and interest in taking pics of the gang. I’m glad you were able to get the new lens on sale! Now, JB might like it if you took some extra close-ups of the new red dragon on the property, named Kubota, since he seemed as enamored of it as you are of the lens! P.S. It was fun seeing your reflection in Honey B’s eye!

Marya, with all but the top photos, sim3lly clicking on the photo will.give you an amplified pic that you may enlarge, zoom in on, etc. Then you can download that pic

Haha, I’ll try to get more pics of their digits just for you, Marya! I’m sure I can make time for another photo shoot of the Kubota, too. 🙂

This was so fun Anthony, I love going back to photography school with you :revolving_hearts:
All my pictures are of Dogs and Cats, I’m pretty jealous of your subject matter !
Thanks for sharing, Happy New Year.:champagne_glass:

I am very much “in school” too, CeeCee! I love applying concepts and techniques to the blog, though, so I’m glad you enjoy the product of these experiments!

Dogs and cats are great subject matter, though! I’d love to see some of your photos sometime.

These are beautful. Please consider adding to the annual Hoot fundraiser for our bidding. Thanks.

Thanks, Marcie! I’ll pitch it to Diana to include more photo prints this year. 🙂

Of course I remember your Micro/Macro post. Congrats on your new lens. An excellent investment!

Like Paulette, I just loved seeing your image in Honey B’s eye, it’s so perfect and probably a lucky occurrence all thanks to your new micro/macro lens. The Christmas photo of Honey B with her mouth plugged with a brussel sprout is so funny and I love how your lens picked up all the items on the ground making them look so super crisp that they look surreal. Great image. Speaking of great images…Dear Lucky and her hands and feet. Sigh.

Enjoy your lens! I know I enjoy what you and the macro lens create.

Thanks, Kathleen! I appreciate the praise, as always!

Great photos. I glad you’re happy with the new lens. Thanks for sharing what you have so far. I’m sure you’ll have more close-ups to share. Take care.

      Thank you, Lou!

Loe these photos! It’s a close up look at these chimps that I love. We all benefit from your gearhead mentality!!! Enjoy yhe toy!!!

    • Avatar Anthony on January 2, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Thanks, Dawn! The comparison and cost of photography equipment can be overwhelming, so I try not to get carried away with my gearhead tendencies or else I might forget to take interesting photos. 🙂
