A wrench in the plans

No day at the sanctuary is off to a good start when you have to call JB to do some emergency maintenance. His plate is full enough as it is and to top it off, we’re in the middle of a cold snap/snow globe situation in Central Washington which requires additional plowing work.

This morning I begrudgingly called for his help over the radio. “Anna to JB. Door G won’t close all the way. There is a 2 inch gap at the bottom and it refuses to go any lower.”  The remote controlled door simply ground to a halt with nothing visibly blocking its progress.

Any door issues we have, we take very seriously and get them fixed as soon as possible. JB would need to take a panel off the door to examine the inner workings of the hydraulics and if he couldn’t fix the door himself, we would need to call in an expert (in the middle of a blizzard, don’t forget).

JB agreed to come do some trouble shooting of the chimp door later in the morning after we finished cleaning the playrooms. Luckily, we had an alternate plan for shifting Honey B, Willy B and Mave and we didn’t need that particular door to be closed to protect staff and start our work.

About a half hour into our cleaning process, Kelsi came to find me. The broken door mystery had been solved.

Do you see what Kelsi spotted?

A small toy nail sitting in the groove of the door, neatly tucked just out of sight of the door operator.

Exhibit A: The blockage

Now only one question remains. Was this an accidental coincidence? Did this toy casually roll into the door’s track, creating an unforeseen holdup in the morning cleaning routine? Possibly… We will never really know for sure…

But my bet is this was no act of serendipity. And there is just one suspect I have on my list that is equal parts mischievous and stubborn enough to pull off such a prank.

Suspect #1: Honey B the obstinate. Seen here casually putting her arm in a doorway to prevent room 7 from being closed off.

Honey B was the first one to come to my mind, too. Now it will be interesting to see whether any other doors become suddenly stuck! I suspect so…

I think you’ve fingered the correct party, Kelsi!

Wow, you guys are getting whomped! But I heard on the radio today that the good news is that you’ll be in a better position next wildfire season! so, there’s that…
Everyone stay warm and drive carefully!

What a great story; made my day! I would bet that’s Honey B’s work???

Oh, my Pal Honey B is a sly one, I also suspect her. In the picture she appears to be giving you ‘the finger’ !! Yep..it’s her.

    • Avatar Paulette on December 30, 2021 at 4:34 pm

“the finger”… you’re right! That’s hysterical. I’m still cracking up. at the blog. at the comments. having a really good laugh today. Thank you Beezus

Is Honey B taking lessons from Jamie? Now that can be a volcanic explision!!! Who are they going to include in their mischievous trio from the other group?

    • Avatar Paulette on December 30, 2021 at 5:39 pm

hmmmm good question! I can’t think of any mischief in the lucky six. maybe eventually that will come out in one of them as their personality Reveals itself at CSNW.

What do you think Anna? Any particularly mischievous chimp in the lucky six?

(yes, I know this is about my fourth entry tonight. 🙂 I just happen to have my iPhone in my hand. And it’s a fun subject tonight!)

My money is on either Terry or Gordo

I’m hoping it’s Dora. She may be small, and she may be an introvert, but we introverts are observent and we notice everything that’s going on. We’re smart and when we see a chance to game the system we take it, and then laugh as the fingers are pointed at everyone but ourselves. Beware CSNW, Dora is watching!

          • Avatar Linda C on December 31, 2021 at 4:11 am

lol, Betsy, we don’t always act on it! “Though she be but small, she is fierce” I could get behind that!

          • Avatar Paulette on December 31, 2021 at 10:35 am

thinking of each of the six, I thought of Dora too, But I couldn’t explain why as you did. Your reasoning is spot on!

Yep I agree it was Ms. Honey B. She’s so clever.

And in the photo of her she’s looking quite pleased w/ herself. My vote is that she thought the humans were bored and needed something to DO with themselves and blocking the closing was just the ticket. She may even have had a bet going with the others as to who would discover how it was blocked and how long it would take to be discovered. Gotta love the creativity even though it disrupted part of the day’s plan.

how can you accuse that peaceful girl of being a known criminal…!!!!

  11. Avatar Tobin on December 30, 2021 at 7:08 pm

Haw-haw-haw! What DNA evidence is needed when that look on Beezie’s face convicts her?! That woman is clever!

Oh come on! How hard did you laugh Anna when you saw that screw?! That is just too funny, and yes….it has the “Bees Knees” trademark written all over it!

Let’s see if I’ve got this timeline correct. The tool bench was gifted at some point during Saturday December 25th. In matter of only 5 days, at what point did Honey B figure out that she could repurpose that screw and throw off your entire day?! My guess is, she had it all fighured out in 24-48 hours but she waited for the “perfect storm” (pun intended) of events to put her plan to work.

Thanks for the laugh and the reminder that we are not the smartest animal on the planet.

    • Betsy on December 30, 2021 at 9:32 pm

“We are not the smartest animal on the planet” Well said Kathleen!

  13. Avatar Deanna on December 31, 2021 at 7:10 am

LMAO!!!! Honey B is who Id put my money on as well!!!! Glad you did not have to take the door apart! I get a pit in my stomach everytime we have a problem with our hydrolic doors… Stay Warm and safe everyone!!

    • Avatar Linda C on December 31, 2021 at 7:16 am

Now that is an informed opinion!

To think until the 1950’s scientists thought only humans were tool users! How far could Honey B and/or Jamie go if they got gift cards to Sears? And what would happen if those two got a chance to work together?

    • Avatar Linda C on December 31, 2021 at 8:57 am

Yes, I’ve lamented in the past that those 2 brains won’t get together.
But either of them with power tools is a scary thought….witness Jamie’s chain saw request….that woman’s seen too many crazy movies!

OMG This reminds me so much of teaching young children. Problem-solving in the classroom begins to take a complicated path when the simplest answer suddenly becomes apparent. What is logical to an adult is a long way from the thought process of a child…or a crafty chimp. We should all be so straight-forward!

  16. Avatar Nancy on January 2, 2022 at 5:55 am

Nope, not an accident. Honey B is definitely the brilliant culprit. Love her!

  17. Avatar Paulette on January 2, 2022 at 11:01 am

you know, I recall seeing a video where Honey B was asked by a caregiver to unblock a hydraulic door that went from an upper level to a lower level. She knew exactly what the caregiver needed and went to remove, I think it was a slinky, or maybe a blanket, that was blocking the door. So yes I think she definitely put that little wooden dowel there deliberately. and even more cunningly, she put it where it was very difficult to see! Brilliant! Just brilliant

    • Avatar Linda C on January 2, 2022 at 11:04 am

Jody has done that, too, Paulette! They know….
