All To Herself

The chimps were raring to go this morning. You could see it on Missy’s face.

They set off up the hill. Notably absent was the group’s leader, who was momentarily distracted.

No matter. Jody would lead the way.

Missy was close behind.

Annie, Burrito, and Foxie brought up the rear.

A few minutes into the walk, Jamie caught up to the group. The gang was all together now, with Negra selflessly staying behind as usual to keep the nests warm.

But one member of the group would not finish the patrol with the others. On morning walks, Foxie often slips away unnoticed to enjoy the quiet solitude of the towers at the top of the hill.

For while she enjoys the camaraderie of a patrol, she seems to relish those brief moments when she has the world all to herself.

Oh, JB, I just adore that picture of Foxie sitting alone looking out at her territory in the mist. Such a powerful image! Maybe she’s pondering her ancient relatives. Maybe she’s thinking about her memoirs. Maybe she’s hoping for her favorite food and games of the day! Whatever, she’s a woman after my own heart just sitting, relishing the profundity of it all, taking it all in and being grateful for sanctuary.

That wonderful photo sums up sanctuary. Freedom, safety, and the choice of whether to run with friends or have quiet moments……beautiful!

I’m in total agreement with Marya, Carol, and Tom. The first and last photos are such moving images. Dear Foxie, queen of all she can see and imagine.

I was also tickled and touched by your description of Nehra — “Negra selflessly staying behind as usual to keep the nests warm.” Deep inside I always knew Neggie had a purpose greater than just snuggling under those blankets. Thank you J.B. for pointing this out to me.

    J. B. I enjoy your being able to paint such vivid pictures for us with your words. It was so good to see Foxie relishing her solitude up high and far from the chim house. She has come a long way over the years. : )

I can barely describe my physical reaction to that photo. It is literally breathtaking. As if my heart swelled so much that it put pressure on my lungs, taking my breath away. In an instant her whole life flashed before me and my eyes stung. The miracle of her life ending up in the hands of CSNW.
