Chimp ID: Gordo

Here’s another chimp ID from The Lucky Six. Gordo! We are still learning so much about this group every day, but one thing we learned right away about Gordo is that he is a foodie! He’s always ready for meal times. I think he could eat his serving plus everyone else’s and still want more! That’s okay though, I can relate. Gordo seems to enjoy the food puzzles we give them for enrichment. I usually see him interacting with them, especially the raisin boards.
Gordo plays chase with us every so often, but for the most part he seems to prefer to lay back and watch the happenings of the day.
He is the smallest male in his group. Gordo has a slim body type, but still is pretty large compared to Burrito!
Gordo loves boxes! We reuse the boxes our produce comes in by giving them to the chimps and he can usually be found sitting in one.
Gordo has a very white beard with a lot of tan coloring around his bottom lip and a little bit above his upper lip. He has a pretty narrow face.
Today Gordo took his lunch carrots and enjoyed them in the Chute. We gave them access to this space a couple weeks ago and Gordo along with the rest of his group have been spending a lot of time out there.

the relative sizes of the chimps is interesting……how large is large—same for small…?
is there a listing of the height and weight of each which would be convenient to put online..?

I would say that it depends on the individual when we say they are larger or smaller, kind of like when we compare humans. Each one carries their weight differently. We look at their weight and their body condition. Some are larger built, while others have a smaller structure just like us! I will find out if we can post the heights and weights of these individuals for you.
Yes, and how about face shape? The original 7 all have long faces, but then Mave came in with a completely different one, and then Terry. Does this indicate a different origin, or subspecies?
Yes, Mave and Terry do have a similar “look”. Burrito seems to be somewhere between them and the 6 ladies who live with him.
Hey Linda, regarding what you said about the coconut “juice boxes” yesterday, I totally agree! I’m sure coconut water tastes much better out of the nut that in a can, so the next time I see one in my grocery store (they have them occasionally) I’m going to snap one up. Seems like a building project to shape them and drill a hole for the straw, but I’m gonna give it a try.
Also, Gordo is quite the handsome gentleman, until you see him sitting in that tiny box, then he looks like a goofball :yum: It’s great to see all sides of him.
Hi, Betsy. I think the green ones are best for drinking, (don’t quote me on that). Most places I’ve been, they use a machete. A hammer and flathead screwdriver- come- chisel might do it.
I think the variety in face shape is along the same lines as us humans. We all have different face shapes, even if related there can be some small differences. I’m not 100% sure about the different origin or subspecies and it could definitely play a part in that. I will look into it!
I love the closeup descriptions of the chimps. Great pictures. He is so adorable .
Gordo is cute, a description that seems ridiculous for a small big guy named Gordo but he is pretty darn cute. Especially when he’s sitting in a box. I like the wooden perches inside the chute. Do most of the chimps (6 and 3) prefer to sit up high on a perch as opposed to being on the floor of the chute?

I do see a lot of them sitting on the perches, especially when eating! The chute starts out as an incline to a flat resting spot and then has a decline that leads to the courtyard. When the chimps are in the chute I see them resting at the top flat part a lot as well that is higher above the ground.

I love to see him coming out of his shell more and more, he seems very careful and quiet ( of course I do not SEE him, but that’s the impression I get ).
Signs of feeling at home, I would say.
Gordo in the box is just too much!!! could he be any cuter!!!!
