Betsy’s Bovine Birthday Bash!

It’s a week of celebrations! Yesterday we celebrated Gordo’s 33rd birthday. Today we are celebrating Betsy’s 14th birthday!

If you remember from last year, we had tried to do something special for the cattle on their birthdays, which usually didn’t end the way we wanted them to.

Today, Kelsi and I decided we wanted to try again. We took the service Gator up to the barn to grab some COB (corn, oats, and barely) and alfalfa pellets to bring to sweet Betsy to celebrate her day.

As we drove onto the pasture to meet them, Betsy was the first to be alert to something new in the back of the Gator. When she realized what it was, she wanted all of it. We were able to make sure Nutmeg, Honey, and Meredith were also able to get some.

We all truly love the cattle here! Every one is uniquely special to us. We often look back at their lives and get into “Awww” mode when we find some of the old photos of their time at Farm Sanctuary. And since this particular page is titled “Betsy: Dairy Survivor, Reality TV Star, Devoted Mother, and Beloved Friend” I thought today would be a good day to share it.

Happy Birthday, Betsy! Here’s to 14 years, and many more to come!

Betsy eating some hay.

She’s a forest cow now!

Happy Birthday, Betsy!

I remember that, awhile ago, Anthony and Chad composed some haiku in honor of each of the cattle. In homage to our beautiful birthday bovine, I offer the following to the annals of poetic masterpieces:

    On July Twenty
    Lunar landing Betsy’s birth
    Cow jumps over Moon

I wish Betsy a happy birthday and yet another good new year of life. I trust that the Moo Crew will provide the Lucky Six with something to talk about when they emerge outside and look upon their cattle neighbors.

Haha, you could tell she didn’t want to give up that scoop!
What a beautiful day it was!
Chad, you studied primatology, and now you’re planning birthday parties for cows! The turns life takes!

Happy 14th birthday Betsy! Nothing like being *spoon fed* COB on your birthday, what a luxury. Big Handsome Nutmeg is such a dainty eater it surprised me. Ms. Meredith dove in for a big mouthful but Nutmeg kept pulling little clusters to nibble upon. Cleary Mama Betsy thought him very good table manners. Thanks for the video and all the photos, it was fun seeing the bovines celebrating Betsy’s birthday on this gorgeous sunny day.

      Typo correction!
“ Cleary Mama Betsy TAUGHT” him very good table manners.” Sigh, so much for dictation mode. That’ll teach me not to proof read.

You crack me up Kathleen…I struggle the most with auto correction… : )

    Happy Birthday Betsy !
Thanks for the great pictures, I really loved reading about her history at farm sanctuary, I didn’t know what a special family they are, and what a wonderful mother and friend Miss Betsy is.

Honestly, I never cared for my nickname, I always thought it was more meant for a cow than a human. But now, knowing an actual bovine and beautiful creature that shares my name I have come to appreciate it more. I am proud to be a supporter of Betsy the bovine, we are both survivors on this planet and against all odds we both have a son. I am here to cheer her on and just seeing her thrive supports me in return. Happy birthday Betsy, and many more.

I never thought of Betsy as a cow’s name. Bessie, yes, but not Betsy.
      🙂

I’ve never thought too much about cows. But lately I have been enamored by these four. Their eyes are so beautiful with the long lashes. And of course their hairdo. And their nose. These four are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing their history. I did click on the link and read it all. I hope Betsy thoroughly enjoyed her treats. I’m glad they now have such a wonderful home and wonderful supporters.

My dad was a farm kid, and always said they were his favorite kind of cow

Thank you Chad for the link to Betsy’s story! The photos of little Nutmeg and Betsy were such a surprise! I had no idea she nursed Meredith too. These four have an amazing past history. How fortunate the reality show producers had the heart and common sense to rescue this little family by contacting Farm Sanctuary. Incredible story. I love and respect the Moo Crew all the more knowing (and seeing) their backstory. And then this tight little family lands in your care with 16 chimpanzee neighbors to look upon — together forever. Talk about happily ever after.,..

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always thought bovines have such gentle looking faces, & their sweet ears to be so
just add more appeal…I also think Betsy is one of the most gorgeous cows I’ve ever seen…It makes me so happy knowing you truly love them, too, & want to give them all the creature comforts they deserve…I’m so happy that you include them in your blogs & share stories about them because I find their little family herd to be so interesting…
