The First Fall Harvest

Happy Fall Equinox, everybody! Though today was the first day of fall, it still felt like summer. It was a pretty mild day with clear skies. With conditions like these, we are trying to capitalize on as many forages for the chimpanzees we can fit in before the colder weather starts to creep in.

On today’s menu were kale, sweet potatoes, carrots, and oranges.

Missy:

I know we think of Missy as Fake Negra, but I almost had a moment where I thought there was a Fake Jody.

Annie:

Jody (the REAL Jody):

Negra:

Burrito:

Jamie:

Foxie:

On her way down from the Escher, Foxie came across one of her nemeses: Grasshoppers!

After their forage, it was perfect weather and timing for naps and relaxing!

Jody resting while still nibbling on some of her greens from the forage.

Foxie about to nod off for an afternoon slumber.

On the other side of the building, the Three were treated to leeks for dinner.

Willy B:

Mave:

Honey B decided to take her food and run, literally. She demanded her portions (especially the leek) and ran into the Chute.

what happens when my Foxie friend sees a grasshopper, Chad?
Thanks for the pics. They all got carrots as big as they are!

Hi Linda, be sure to click on the red word “Grasshoppers!” in Chad’s text below the photo to see Foxie’s famous grasshopper sneer. She totally cracks me up with her sneer face. Those huge, jumping-flying hoppers come right at you — it’s like they come out of nowhere, they dive-bomb you! : )

thanks, Kathleen! I hadn’t noticed that it was in red!

I’ve seen Foxie usually give off a sneer, slap at them, or (more commonly) a combination of the two.

Thank you CSN for your love & never-ending devotion to these magnificent chimpanzees in your care…Your outstanding blog, photos & daily stories made it so easy for me to genuinely love all ten of them with all my heart…

    They’ve even in my dreams on occasion… : )

A++ for all the excellent photos today! Missy wins the day as Fake Farmer Jo. And since Missy’s BFF Annie is seen with one lone carrot, I sure hope Missy shared some of her bounty. Looks like a perfectly perfect first day of autumn, everyone basking in that glorious western sunlight. And Burrito looks like his old happy self. Life is good in Cle Elum.

Thank you so much, Kathleen! Annie had plenty of her own food she found. Each person has their own technique for forages. Those like Jody will gather as much as they possibly can and bring it back to the Greenhouse to enjoy. Others like Annie and Foxie eat as they go and bring only a few (if any) items back to snack on later to the Greenhouse. And others like Missy have a mix and match technique where they will eat their most prized collection on the Hill then bring back the rest they find to the Greenhouse.
