Cabbage for Breakfast

September 4, 2020 by J.B. -

Volunteer and friend of the sanctuary, Krissy, recently dropped off some garden-grown cabbage for the chimps. Some of you might not consider cabbage to be breakfast food but the chimps would beg to differ. In fact, it may have been more popular than the oranges, apples, and primate chow.

A rare photo of all seven chimps together on Young’s Hill.

Negra, pre-cabbage

Jody, gathering all the cabbage and apples she can hold…

…and making a beeline to the Greenhouse.

Burrito, trying to conceal the fact that while the others found cabbage leaves, he found an entire head. Just play it cool and don’t make eye contact.

In addition to everything she personally does for the chimpanzees, Krissy also supports the chimpanzees through her business, The Whole Pet Shop (in Woodinville, WA and Roslyn, WA), which is a Chimpanzee Champion-level sponsor of Hoot! 2020. Have you checked out all of the incredible items up for auction now through September 12? Your support will not only help keep Negra up to her ears in cabbage, but it will also help us provide a home for even more deserving chimpanzees.

So so true about cabbage! Brought back memories. While in Cameroon w/ Chimps rescued by Dr. Sheri Speede, I brought cabbage to Kiki quite often! His happiness was great! He loved the cabbage so obviously about anything else.
Thank you for bringing back these wonderful memories.
I think Kiki is on FB! I know that Sanaga Yong is…

Thank you Krissy for giving everyone a wonderful breakfast treat this morning. I can’t get over the size of those cabbage leaves, you have an amazing green thumb. Gorgeous!

And thank you J.B. for all of these photos. I am not sure I have ever seen a photo of all seven in one shot (not out on Young’s Hill). I love, love, love the photo of Negra, pre-cabbage. That expression her face, sigh. And Jody looks wonderful these days, thank goodness. Jamie appears to be practicing her pant hoot for your Hoot! hoot contest. But our boy Burrito, Mr. B himself, is beyond precious in that shot with his big ol’ cabbage tucked close to his belly. Your witty caption totally cracked me up. Yup, he is looking as cool as can be, cute, but very cool. So I have to ask, did the girls ever discover his secret stash!? : )

Is this the same Krissy who sponsored a day in honor of her parents not too long ago?(or they sponsored one for her?)
Well, they got it right! You are amazing!
Thanks for the gift to the chimps (and blog readers!)

“Just play it cool and don’t make eye contact” really cracked me up. It really does look as if he is saying that.

That first picture of all 7 is a keeper. That would make a nice 8 x 10 with
a beautiful frame around it. Is there any way of getting it blown up to that
size. I would love to purchase a copy of that photo. It is rare for sure.
    Thank you, Barbara Huljak
