Portraits of the Day

Anna and I are wrapping things up in the Chimp House and reflecting on what a long day it has been. Sadly, my initial plans for composing a video to attach to today’s blog deteriorated as the day went on. Instead, you’re all getting these portraits of three of my favorite chimps. (Note: I have many, many “favorite” chimps.)

First, Willy B wanted to look into the camera lens and then see the resulting images.

Then, Honey B sat in the same spot while she was eating lunch. She grasped a roll of craft paper, one of her favorite enrichment materials, in her right hand while she nibbled on carrots with her left.

Jamie, per usual, did laps around the Hill during the morning and afternoon. As always, she was vigilant and perceptive.

We hope everyone is staying safe (and staying sane). Don’t forget to wear a mask!

Loved these photos, Anthony! You always do a great job, so please don’t think we’re being shortchanged in any way.

Knowing how you have successfully cared for the chimps, cattle and property with a core staff, been consistently protective of your delightful charges, and brought us daily views of the work, insights gained on chimps who are gaining their freedom of choice… never need to apologize for a short post. I am amazed at the amount of information I have gained, and delight of seeing the sanctuary hard at work enriching the lives of them all.

I’m glad that you like the blog, Barbara!

Also, thank you for Miranda, haha! She was an absolutely great intern/volunteer, and I was always thrilled when she was around the sanctuary.

always wear the mask at the tiny gym, even if it’s just my trainer and asthmatic me! Def not fun!
I was going to say, after the first pic, “I wonder if Willy B knows how handsome he is?”….but I think he probably does!

Wonder what it takes to fall off your “favorites” list?

    Stay safe, everyone!

If the amount of time he spends looking at images/videos/reflections of himself is a good indication, then he definitely knows how handsome he is. 😉

Love those pics. The very top pic of Willy B is awesomely fantastic. I want that and framed.

Thanks, John! Perhaps we could arrange that!

The daily blog pics NEVER disappoint me…I’ve always wondered if any of you dear, hardworking caretakers have any professional photo backgrounds (like photo journalists) since your beautiful photos are always so visually stunning & to me, ‘poetic’…I’m moved to tears at times when you not only (& with such expertise) capture individual images of the chimps, the cattle, the breathtaking scenic property, the gorgeous birds (Purple Martin’s ???) & even the beautiful deer, but you capture emotion of the moment as if you’re telling a story without words…These photos are such a treat…

    • Avatar Anthony on July 12, 2020 at 3:01 pm

      Thanks for the compliments, Debi!

As far as I know, only Chad had formal experience as a photographer before working with chimps (he was a photojournalist for the US Marine Corps). I could be wrong about everybody else NOT being professional photographers, though, because all of the caregivers have diverse backgrounds and I learn surprising facts about them all the time.

We all seem to be constantly improving our photography skills by trying to capture newer and better images of the chimps since that’s a small-but-critical aspect of contributing to the blog!

Ditto Barbara and Debi! Beautiful words and images…as always! We are NEVER shortchanged..even if you only posted occasionally, just knowing what you do for all these beautiful souls is enough…

      Thanks, Chris!
