Snowpocalypse 2019
February 9, 2019 by Diana -
As the state of Washington braces for more snow, the chimpanzees spent the day thoroughly enjoying the first day of Snowpocalypse / Snowmageddon / Snowzilla WA 2019.
We really just got a few inches here, which is pretty normal this time of year. Anna did do a pretty good job of hyping the drama of the storm with her snow and ice sculpture for the chimps:
Missy did her best to carefully remove an icicle so she could abscond with it to the loft:
Jody decided to eat hers in situ:
Foxie kept a close eye on the snow as she consumed it (as is her way):
Jamie received a bonus treat today! After reading Anna’s post from the other day, donors must have immediately started gathering things to send, because we have already received some special Jamie enrichment.
We thought Snowmaggedon was a good time to give Jamie a donated folio full of interesting things.
She carefully pulled out and sorted through each item. When she came across a piece of paper that had photos of boots, she put it aside. After closely examining each card and envelope, she picked up the paper with the boot photos and went upstairs with some leftover lunch for some private Jamie-time. This chimpanzee knows what she likes:

Yay, enrichment coming in! I got my new sidebag/briefcase yesterday, so will polish up my old one with all of its pouches, zippers, buckles and pen holders, put some fun things in there, and ship it off!
Okay, everyone, hear me out on this, because it may sound a little crazy, but…….could get some good publicity for the sanctuary (which leads to more donors?)
Last week, Jimmy Kimmel issued one of his challenges……you know, he’s the guy who tells parents to tell their kids that they ate all of their Halloween candy, and then record the response? Well, I forgot until I saw it on YouTube today that his challenge for last week was “I made spaghetti and snowballs”…….most of the kids were not impressed, some were……….and today I was thinking…..imagine how excited the chimps would be to see spaghetti and snowballs! And you could capture the response with “pasta cam”! What do you guys think? Too much?
Oh, interesting! I bet the chimpanzees would love spaghetti and snow balls.
And even though the Kimmel challenge is over, if you sent footage or a link to his crew under the guise of “we were waiting for some snow”, I think the situation is unique enough that he might give you some air time on a slow news day (not that we have tons of those these days, sigh…..!) Briefcase/sidebag being mailed off either today or tomorrow.
That’s a cool idea. I wonder if it would bring in money to the sanctuary to have that kind of advertising on Jimmy Kimmel. And that guy will put anything that’s weird on his show.
Lawrence O’Donnell has adopted the desk campaign for kids in Malawi, and he has regular updates. So I say, ‘go for it.’ There is no risk and nothing to lose. In a perfect world he will embrace the chimps and the center & the work, and may travel up for a visit.
Thank you to all the staff at the sanctuary for taking care of all these monkeys. I think Missy and all the other monkeys are cute.
Thanks, Linda! We wouldn’t be proper primatologists if we didn’t point out that Missy is a chimpanzee, which is different than a monkey 🙂
I never remember having a snow day that was even half as much fun as yours, well done Anna. These photos are a kick! Especially Foxie checking out her snow wadge. Happy to hear Jamie’s portfolios are arriving. I too need to dig through my flat files to see what I can come up with to include in my package. Too bad I never designed a Boot catalog! ; )
I know that people can not, should not, ever, have close personal contact with chimpanzees but I have to admit, seeing that last photo of Jamie makes me wish I could fluff my fingers through the hair on the back of her beautiful head. Sorry, but it’s true. There is something about chimp bed-head that just melts my heart.
I so much love pictures of Jamie looking at books. She is such an amazing Chimp. I never knew any animal could be so intelligent (besides dogs of course). Love her so very much.
Actually they’ve come to find out that pigs are even smarter than dogs. As time goes on we find out that humans really aren’t “all that” ?
