Summer Negra

It might be just our imaginations, but we think we’ve seen a subtly more energetic Negra this summer! It seems like she’s spent more time outdoors, been more playful and shown more interest in different enrichment items recently. Don’t get me wrong, she still enjoys an extra amount of down time, but we are always thrilled to see the Queen of the sanctuary up and about!

I love it. She just has such a sweet face! It’s something about her eyes. It took me awhile to warm to her, since the more gregarious goofball Mr. Burrito-toes is more my speed, but the more I’ve spent time with her (she has THE best food grunts!), the more I love her. <3

Speaking of the Queen, I thought I'd announce that Diana has given me official sanctuary permission to use one of the Queen's photos as a reference photo for a painting! I'll be once again donating a coloured pencil painting to the sanctuary for an upcoming auction, and you are more than welcome to follow her progress on two different blogs:

Please say hi and that you're also a "Cle Elum Alum" in the comments. Ha!

    Thanks, Diana, and everyone!

I love Negra to my core so I’m very excited to hear you will be capturing her beautiful essence with your magical coloured pencil painting! Your image of Burrito was amazing. Looking forward to seeing the final piece.

        Hi, Kathleen,

Thanks so much for your sweet reply!

It took over 12 hours for my comment to post, so I wasn’t even sure it had and I was freaking out.

I love painting these chimps. There’s just something so intimate about it. By the time I’m done, I feel closer to them somehow; tracing each line and shadow of their faces; each highlight and reflection in their eyes, gives me some kind of perceived insight into their personalities. It soothes me, too, because as I said, as a Lupus patient, I’m so aware of the testing that happened on my behalf, as well as what they endured, and I’ll be honest: that hurts. I tend to take guilt into myself for their suffering.

Anyway, thanks so much for your support, and I hope you’ll follow one of the blogs.

        Cheers.

Always great to hear positive comments and photos about our beautiful Queen Negra. She deserves all this freedom and happiness?

I agree whole-heartedly with the comments from the two afore-mentioned Kathleens. I love seeing images of Negra and all of her Royal Subjects moving through the tall grass of their land, foraging beneath the light of the summer sun. What a beautiful portrait at the top of this blog posting.
