Spring snoozin’

It’s a profoundly peaceful, beautiful and lazy spring day here at the sanctuary. Napping in the warm breeze, tickling of toes, napping, listening to the birds, foraging for wild stuff, napping, chasing huge Swallowtail butterflies (that would be me), the scent of blooming mountain lupine, watching the grass blowing, napping, the end.

One of our bluebird neighbors peeking out:

Is that Jody’s wadge in front of her lol?

      Hi Amy,

That is an alfalfa cube! We put them out a few times a week for the chimps to forage for. But it will become a wadge. 😉

The beauty of the simple things in life!

    Okay..now I am really sleepy.

It looks as though Negra made a pillow for herself. Do the others ever do that? I notice Annie is using her arm/hand as a pillow. Would they use pillows in their nests or just “de-stuff” them?

      Hi Sherry,

The chimps who build really fluffy nests, like Negra, shape and weave the blankets in a kind of donut shape so the edges often make good “pillows.” But it’s personal preference in the moment. Yes, pillows would get torn apart, but it would also be very difficult for us to launder them. 🙂

    Are the bats back yet?

    • Avatar Katelyn on May 11, 2016 at 5:59 pm

Hi Meg, we discovered last year that we have two bat families and I just heard one of them for the first time a few days ago. Haven’t seen the other one, but should be any day – usually they are here by now. 🙂

That last picture…a close up of Foxie’s hand … shows fingernails. Do you caretakers have to give manicures??? Do the nails grow like ours do???

    • Avatar Katelyn on May 12, 2016 at 9:22 am

      Hi Elaine,
Yes, the chimps have fingernails and hair as we do (opposed to claws and fur). They manage to keep them trimmed on their own by biting them/grooming, though some do keep longer nails than others. 🙂

Idyllic. Perhaps they are especially tired after a day on the Twister! Off to nap…
