What a great video! It was so fun to see everyone eating. I am amazed at how well they wait for their share and seem to know they will get 2 pieces of everything. Really amazed the way they chow down the raw onion.
Jamie’s skills at cleaning up are quite impressive. She has no problem with the challenge of getting those fallen pieces. Everyone seems so gentle when they take the food with their lips..no nibbling your fingers?

They are gentle most of the time, but chimps do bite, so we have very strict safety rules. All parts of our bodies (including our fingers) stay on our side of the caging at all times.

I was amazed at how they knew they received 2 of everything. And no fighting over food.
I was wondering the same thing as Barbara…how they knew they get only two and how come they don’t get aggressive and greedy and want what the one standing next to them just got. The highlight for me of the video was cleaning up after with a tool, dragging into their area with a tool. These wonderful animals never cease to amaze me
Occasionally conflicts do occur during mealtime, and sometimes a more dominant chimp will take food from a less dominant one. But in general, I think after eight years at the sanctuary, they trust in the routine and are confident that everyone will get their share. Overall, it’s remarkable how smoothly most meals go.
I think seeing them eat their meals is one of my all time very favorite things. Nothing more fun than listening to Foxie blowing a raspberry!! Thanks for this great video, you could do this everyday and I wouldn’t tire of it. ; )
May I ask why you informed Missy that you were giving Annie her bags of chow?
Good question, Kathleen. We try our best to respect the chimps’ hierarchy, especially at mealtimes when things can be a little tense. As you know, Annie and Missy are BFFs, but when food is involved, Missy sometimes pulls rank over Annie. So we generally serve (or offer to serve) Missy before Annie to try to avoid any conflicts.
Great video! A real treat. I’m sure they have their days but it seems that, now that the chimps know that food will come again, that they are secure and safe and not darted and abused, that they can wait patiently for their turn and take however much time they want to eat and enjoy their food. Who was at that the back at one point? Annie? She seemed to be much more patient and less demanding? Mind you, I watch this at work with no volume so I know I’m missing an awful lot!
Probably Annie, yes. Since she’s the lowest in the hierarchy, she tends to lie low and wait her turn.
