Quiet

Negra is an introvert. While she enjoys the occasional grooming session or gentle play with the other chimpanzees, she chooses to spend the vast majority of her time by herself, usually under a blanket, napping or gazing out the window at the valley below the chimp house. As the grandma of the group, she sometimes has to tell the other, more rambunctious, chimps to settle down so she can have some peace and quiet.

It’s not unusual to catch Negra in pensive moments like this one.

I love the way she folds her arms. I hope her thoughts are peaceful and that she feels happy to be free to go outside or rest under her blankets. She so deserves the peace after her abuse in the lab. I too wish I could somehow comfort her.

She’s just so darned cute and squishy.

I’ve often wondered something, however. Is it her age that makes her quiet and sombre? Or do you think it’s that she took the longest to transition from such a horrible, torturous past? Does she show any signs of PTSD?

    Thanks.

Hi Carla – Yes, Negra shows signs of PTSD. I think her behavior can be explained by some combination of trauma from her past, and personality.

Perhaps why I love her the most. I hope she never has a troubled memory and enjoys every minute of her quiet solitude and cozy soft nests……. and I am looking forward to “Negra Weather” when she ventures out to nosh on the sweet green springtime grass! I really do love you Queen Negra.
