Making Up

Burrito depends on Foxie quite a bit. Despite the fact that Foxie’s about half his size, she’s his friend, his security blanket, and his most loyal protector. She’s always there when he needs a hug.

But everyone behaves a little unkindly to their friends from time to time. Yesterday, during a dominance display, Burrito thumped Foxie on the back as he charged past her. This isn’t unusual behavior for Burrito, or for any chimpanzee in the midst of a display. Still, it’s probably not fun to be the recipient of the thumping, especially when it comes from your good friend.

Luckily, chimps are experts at reconciliation. A little grooming is all it usually takes to make amends.

Very first part of this video:

B: Foxie, I really am sorry I thumped you. I just got so excited and I didn’t mean to hurt you.
Foxie: I really don’t want to hear what you have to say, you thumped me.
    B: I know, I am really sorry.
    Foxie: ohh, okay.

    So forgiving.

The exact same conversation was running through my mind ! He sheepishly was trying to explain his bad behavior to her. 🙂

Sometimes we all disappoint and hurt the ones we love. But the best part is they have each other as friends! A far cry from their life before coming to CSNW. What a sweet friendship. I am happy they have each other.

So tender. I don’t know how anyone can say chimpanzees aren’t human, or perhaps it should be how humans are chimpanzees with bigger egos, less forgiveness, and poorer communication skills. Sweet.
