Droopy lip vs heavy lip

My all time favorite chimpanzee facial expression is the “relaxed face with drooped lip.”

Jody is famous for her drooped lip face. In fact, I discovered today that if you do a google image search for “drooped lip chimpanzee,” the first three images that come up are of Jody!

But there’s another set of perhaps not as famous lips among the Cle Elum Seven – those of Negra. Rather than classic drooped lip, we like to describe Negra’s lips as “heavy.”

Below are some examples of each. What do you think is more charming – Jody’s drooped lip or Negra’s heavy lip?

How can you choose? ????. They are both adorable, but I must admit I do have a soft spot for Negra.

Well, while I was looking at the first pictures of Jody all I could think of was how expressive she is….then there’s Neggie, just as expressive in her own way and more so as one scrolls thru the pics…. not fair to choose, they each are unique and priceless!

I love them both but I’m with Dalyce, I have to go with Neggie on this one.

Negra is so beautiful but you have to love Jody. If I had to choose it would be Negra.

I believe I love both girls lips. Such beautiful expressive faces. (I think that last photo of Negra is very sweet).

I found it so funny that you Googled “drooped lip chimpanzee” I had to do the same thing. I saw lots of photos of CSNW chimps and so many of Jody, too funny. And I Googled “Heavy lip Chimpanzee” and the first 2 photos are of Neggie! ; )

That’s great! I didn’t even think to google ‘heavy lip chimpanzee’ since it’s not a “real” chimpanzee facial expression, though maybe it will enter others’ taxonomy, thank to Negra ;).

Neggis is pretty difficult to resist!

I too love them both but after looking closely at them it looks to me as if Jodi’s is more of an expression that she has control over whereas Negra’s heavy lip looks as if it’s (sorry Negra), like it’s saggy, due to perhaps being elderly? I tried to say that delicately so as not to hurt her feelings. Kind of like my chin skin. 🙂 That and lots of other parts that are starting to sag! Ha!
It seems to be more pronounced in the photos where she’s asleep, which leads me to believe it’s more of loose skin thing and or relaxed facial muscles.
Ok, I’ll shut up now about poor Neggie’s heavy lip…She’s adorable and I love her regardless of what her lip is doing! 🙂

I love them. The photos are all so funny. Chimps facial expressions are so cute. My mom said chimps cannot be cute and cuddly , that is not true. They can be cute and cuddly. But what she meant was they cannot be with us all the time due to them being wild animals. I understand. But they have a sweet side and an aggressive side. I remember what Jane Goodall said about a chimps aggressive side. She said it bothered her because it reminds her of a humans dark side. She did not say it exactly how I put it ;but it was something along those lines. Please correct me. My point is, they can be cute and cuddly with one another and with us , that does not mean we have to be in physical contact with them for them to be cute and cuddly with us. We can embrace their cute and cuddly from a distance. 🙂

Both are so wonderfully expressive.. Negra does seem more like it’s just part of her normal facial response.. but SO cute.. and Jody’s is clearly “saying something”… I love that it is possible to observe them in detail through this blog and CSNW… Thank you always!
