Chimp ID: Burrito

This is Part 2 of our series of blog posts on chimpanzee identification. (For last week’s post on Annie’s distinguishing characteristics, click here.)

Burrito is the only male in the Cle Elum Seven, and he is probably the easiest chimp to identify. For one thing, he’s a guy:

People often comment that Burrito is “fluffier” than the other chimpanzees, and that’s because his hair is often pilo erect (standing on end due to excitement):

Unlike Annie, Burrito has lots of white coloration on his face:

He’s missing the top of his right ear:

And of course you can always tell Burrito by his charm:

When B is “fluffy” you are able to see how buffed out the guy is… Impressive

I had to laugh at that first photo and description…Yup, there’s no mistaking Burrito for a girl! 🙂 I wonder what happened to the poor guy’s ear?

Several of the chimps had old injuries when they arrived in Cle Elum – probably the result of fights with other chimpanzees.

I like the third picture. It looks like he is resting his arm on his knee.

I notice that more than Burrito have damaged ears. Is that common and how does it happen – fights with other Chimps?

Hi Wanda. See my reply to Chris above. 🙂

    Excellent! Burrito balls. 🙂

I often have trouble telling the girls apart – never had problems with fluffy goofy Burrito, from the front or the back. Looking forward to more in this series!

Some of the 7 I have no problem telling because they have their own characteristics. Mr. B, Annie, Negra and Missy have pretty distinctive features.
