Jamie and Foxie vs the GoPro

If you follow the sanctuary on Facebook, you’ll know that this is posting a bit later than usual because Jamie decided she wanted to take several post-dinner walks around Young’s Hill tonight.

It’s a beautiful end-of-summer evening, so of course I could not refuse the request. Once she was satisfied, I came back in to review the footage the GoPro captured this morning.

The GoPro revealed that Jamie had quite the day. She spent a good 30 minutes on the termite mound, then decided to check out the GoPro camera, which is securely locked in a steel casing (you’ll see why below). Foxie took her turn at the camera too.

They are persistent, aren’t they!?!? Can they hear it running? I’m just wondering what attracts them to it.

They can see the camera when it’s in the steel box. There’s a small flashing light when it’s on. chimpanzees notice even small changes to their environment. And yes, they are so persistent! I cut out several minutes of Jamie moving the camera around.

ROTFL That is hilarious! Especially Foxie putting her tongue in there to check it out and then she nonchalantly picks up her dolls and walks away. I wonder what attracted Jamie to it in the first place, from what I gather it isn’t something that new. I have to go watch it again! D

Cody – see reply above about what attracted the chimps to the camera. Foxie gathering her dolls and walking away is my favorite prat 🙂

Very hilarious. Loved it. Foxie licking the camera made me laugh. I needed that today. I am surprised the camera wasn’t blurry after licking it. That camera sure takes a beating! Thanks for sharing. 😉

I wonder if they discussed the camera before both of them trying to get it. Something like, “what do you think that thing is in that box?” “I dunno…let’s go poke at it and see if it bites.”

If Jamie only knew the WHOLE thing was caught on film!

how often are there treats in the treat rock? and do they ever go unnoticed?

    • Diana on September 1, 2013 at 11:07 pm

Kerri – we just recently started a schedule for the treat rock, so we’re using it once per week or so now. I don’t think treats have gone completely unnoticed because Jamie is usually very aware when we fill it, though how long she works on it does depend on what the treat is and what other food is out on the hill.
