Breakfast on the hill

If you “like” us on Facebook, you may have seen our update yesterday that the chimps got to enjoy breakfast in the sunshine on Young’s Hill. It was a gorgeous day– absolutely perfect for a tropical forage (coconuts, pineapple, and lettuce).

What a wonderful day! The birdsong must delight their (and your) ears! Seeing them among all the growing grass also made me think of … woodticks. What is the plan for the chimps and these critters. I mean, you can’t give them Frontline like for dogs can you? Yet wouldn’t they be as suseptible to Lyme’s Disease as us? Just wondering.
Chimps are really good at grooming both themselves and one another, so I don’t think a tick would stand a chance. 🙂
Love that Negra seems to be out more and more when it’s sunny. Also, she seems to be picking up some speed – Nice to see.

If Negra keeps eating lettuce and “running” back to the greenhouse buy the end of summer she is going to lean and fit.

They were eating dinner in the greenhouse so we didn’t see much of a reaction from them.
I see a quick jog back to the safety of the enclosure still did not hamper Negra from picking up more munchies for the indoors!
It still amazes and delights me to see them sitting in a sunny patch of grass after all those years in cages. The wow factor is still there after watching them for the past 4 years!
Loved this…it’s amazing how thick and lush all that vegetation grew in. Do they eat the bamboo at all or just play in and around it?? Do you think maybe Burrito didn’t get enough to eat in his past life…I hope that’s not the case and he just loves food…like alot of us!!

I haven’t seen anyone take the time to eat the bamboo that is planted on the hill yet. We do have a couple of small bamboo plants in the human area of the greenhouse that occasionally the chimps enjoy to munch on, especially Jamie and Annie.
As for Burrito- It is doubtful that Burrito’s love of food stems from not getting enough to eat in his earlier years. Foraging and collecting food is a normal chimp behavior and when he sees something he likes, he goes for it so he can get as much as he can before the other chimps beat him to it.
Thanks Jackie…that’s good to know that he was never deprived of food…were any of the chimps underweight when they came to the sanctuary? I know that none of them were in the tip top shape that they are in now though! :}
When the chimps came here from the lab, they weren’t in the best shape, but no one was underweight.
