Celebrating another day on the hill

There’s so much to celebrate this week, from Save the Chimps final migration to the NIH’s dramatic announcement about the role of chimpanzees in biomedical research.

Here at the sanctuary, the chimps celebrated another sunny winter day by running around their 2-acre enclosure.

    Gotta love that snow for a special treat! Yes, it truly is a cause for celebration! I am so thank-ful and relieved for all the other chimps out there….who are just another step closer to sanctuary and for the ones who will never have to endure “research” at all. More like hell for them!
    I’m wondering…when the 7 come in after a chilly, play on the hill….do they run for their blankets and demand something warm to drink? 🙂

      Sometimes Jamie will dry her hands with a towel or blankets if she gets wet, but usually they don’t make a bit deal of it.

    How I love seeing all that activity out on the hill, especially the gently loping gait of a chimpanzee in the wilds of Washington! 😉

    Anyone thought of mixing a little fruit puree into some snow?

      Yes, we done that a few times. The chimps also love it when we mix dried blueberries in with the snow. But to be honest, I love the fact that they love plain snow. We are always looking for ways to keep the chimps enriched and, at the same time, we are always worried about their diet – and the two often seem to be in conflict. So watching the chimps gets so excited over a zero-calorie food is kind of a dream come true for us. Maybe I’m just looking for anything positive about winter in Washington 🙂

    What is so nice about this too is that the chimps aren’t dependant upon a human to have a fun snow treat. They can eat it when they want and how much they want.
