Annie's blankets

The chimps’ stuff

We leave out a lot of toys, blankets and other stuff for the chimps each day, and they pick what they want out of it. It’s interesting to me that there are such individual variations in what the chimps’ choose to hold on to for the day, or sometimes just a moment. I often think of the years and years before they came to the sanctuary when they had nothing.

Here’s Annie staking claim to a couple of clean blankets:

and enjoying her spoils:

Jody with a new piece of enrichment – woven and coiled jute from new Canadian friends:

Burrito usually chooses things he can put in his mouth:

and here’s Negra lying in her nest of blankets – Jody’s not the only chimpanzee who does the yoga “happy baby” pose:

Today was a very special day for me with the CE7. Today was my first visit with the CE7 after a three month “holiday”. During this time I thought about the CE7 everyday and looked forward to the daily blog posts and the day when I would be able to see them again. Everyone came to the caging in the green house to have a short visit except Jody who was just too busy doing the “happy baby” pose to come say Hi. Jamie was interested in my shoes at first then decided she needed to make sure I knew who was boss and threw some wood chips and sand at me. Then she quickly went to a window ledge and got busy with a grape vine. I’m so happy to be back and have the CE7 and staff in my life again.

I love seeing all the pictures that you post. They make my day, especially when I think what their life was like before compared to their fantastic life now – full of care, companionship and choices.

I can not imagine the lab people who could walk by these chimps everyday and not even offer them a little bit of comfort or some little thing to relieve their utter boredom. Where were their hearts and souls? I am so thank-ful that they have you all at the Sanctuary now, to give them the compassion, care, good food, companionship and love that they were deprived of for so long.
