Yesterday J.B. and volunteers Steve and Rick braved the cold to frame the climbing structures that will be on Young’s Hill. (To learn about our plans for Young’s Hill, a 2-acre outdoor habitat for the chimpanzees, watch this video.)

It’s so exciting to see work being done on Young’s Hill. In no time at all the CE7 will be under blue skies without bars or caging, for some it will be the first time in their life.

i wondered can the chimps see any of the goings on ?

      • Avatar J.B. on February 7, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Yes, they’ve been watching. The greenhouse panels are translucent, not transparent, so they don’t have a clear view. But in a couple months the wall panels will come off again and they will be able to see everything that is going on up there.

Will you use an electric fence to keep the chimps from wandering away?

Forgive my ignorance but, are there any dangers from nature out there (bears, wolves, etc.) that might pose a danger to the chimps? Sorry, I don’t know what roams around the Cle Elum area.

Yes, Young’s Hill will be enclosed by two separate electric fences. The primary fence will be 15 feet tall, with the top 3 feet cantilevered inward. The secondary fence, 10 feet away from the primary, will be 12 feet tall and will be a continuation of our current fence that surrounds the facility. The secondary fence acts as a backup, in case there is ever a failure of the primary fence.

We do have mountain lions here, and probably bears although I’ve never seen evidence of them on our property. But the two electric fences will keep everything but birds and burrowing animals out of the chimps’ enclosure.

should be interesting when we have visited monkey world her ein the UK ive seen chimps catch birds rabbits and even frogs in their enclosures , these tend to be played with or worn as an accessory on the head or round the shoulders as in the case of a rabbit 🙂
