OK, I give up what was it? Looked like a letter of the alphabet, maybe in “wood” block form? (Obviously, I’m impaired!). 🙂

Did they get down so close to smell it, maybe hoping it was a snack or something? They touched it and put their faces right down in it.

I was pretty enthralled just watching their whole process!

    Great video!

It was a wooden block they were using to “block” the hole. I think it was a mouse or chimpmunk hole. I think they knew it wasn’t something to eat but were very courious about the hole in their space.

or maybe they saw a rodent run into that hole and were trying to contain with the wooden blocks.

But … but … what *was* it?? 🙂 Did staff look?

I love to watch their keen interest in the hole!…..spontaneous, unintentioned enrichment….what fun!!! And how smart of them to decide to block the hole to keep the suspicious thing out of their space!

I was impressed with Annie and her thought to block the hole. I noticed that, Annie, wiped her fingers, again, after getting something on them.

Geez, I almost broke my nose getting closer to the screen. What was it? It is amazing how every day you get to see something different and interesting. These chimps are certainly worth all your efforts. Thanks again and again.

I was there that day and saw nothing. Before I started filming, there was a lot of alarm calling and threat barking towards that spot, but as far as I could tell, nothing was there. A few weeks prior, there was a garter snake in the same spot (which resulted in the same reaction), so it’s possible a snake was there and went into the hole.

They are so smart. I loved the video. thanks for taking the time to show this to us. Smart to cover the hole up. That is what I would do. I love them.

I kept expecting something to pop out!!! I loved the way Annie poked at it with a piece of straw before using her finger. They’re both much braver then I would be!!

Thanks for posting this – it is important for people to see and understand chimp thought process. Well done all – chimps for solving the “problem” and humans for capturing on film and posting!

    Thanks for all you do,

Whatever it was, the girls made it clear it wasn’t welcome. They never cease to amaze me how smart they are. Knowing if they blocked the hole, it wouldn’t get out is pretty clever to me! The intensity of the inspection and solution is fascinating to watch!
