On Tuesday, the Cle Elum City Council passed a proclamation to make the Cle Elum Seven honorary citizens of the city. The Daily Record published a story about this, which was picked up by the Associated Press earlier today.

This afternoon Gary Chittim from King 5, who was here the day the chimps arrived, came out today to see how the Cle Elum Seven are doing a year later.

The story will be on the news tonight – tune in!

King 5 also has a new blog called Pet Dish, and Katherine Sather wrote about the proclamation today on that blog.

Thanks to the City of Cle Elum, what a great gift you’ve given to our special friends. The last year has brought a lot of us joy, we’ve watched seven lab chimps become just chimpanzees. Great job everyone!

I just saw the story on KING5! Great idea, Sarah…and congratulations to the Cle Elum 7 for becoming citizens of Cle Elum! It was so much fun to see the chimps looking so relaxed and happy even with a news crew videotaping them. 🙂 You all ~ Chimps and Staff Members ~ looked wonderful! Great news story!

    Good for the city council!
Another benefit of residency the chimps won’t have is voting rights, but since they aren’t being taxed I don’t suppose that will be an issue … 🙂
