There’s a story running today on the AP wire about privately owned chimpanzees and problem of finding somewhere for them to go when they “outgrow” their private homes. Along with the print story there’s some video featuring Jamie. Check out the story and see the video below.

This was a great story and loved the video.
I know we’ve seen videos on sanctuaries, chimp attacks and people who love having chimps as pets. The video viewpoint we haven’t seen, from the news media, is the difficulty people have when they have a pet chimpanzee. How much it costs to buy a baby chimp, they feed them, house them, keep their cage clean and give them enrichment at the cost is $10,000 or more a year. The print stories are good but for me a video would say it much more loudly, don’t have a chimpanzee for a pet.
This is a big shout-out to all forms of news media, local and national, thanking them for getting these stories out there.
I forgot one thing, has CSNW ever been approached about taking on more chimpanzees?
Great video, Sarah! And kudos to the video editor – they provided some really nice visuals to support the dialog.
I think someone should do an in-depth story on the changed life of the woman who was attacked … not out of purient interest, but to convey just how dangerous a scared and/or mad chimp can be! I’d like to think humans displayed the altruism to think of the chimps needs first, but unfortuantely I think that all too often their behavior changes first out of self-interest and self-preservation.

I don’t think I realized that Jamie is the dominant chimp. Why am I not surprised that she’s an empire-builder? lol
