We are so thankful to long-time friend of the chimpanzees, bovines, and humans, Kathleen Corby, who graciously sponsored this day of sanctuary in honor of the life of Emory University primatologist, Frans de Waal, and his incredible legacy.

“I just discovered the saddest of news. On March 14th we lost Frans de Waal from this earth. Mama is still one of my most beloved chimpanzee people. I still say in my head “Mama and Monique. Monique and Mama” when I see the love and tight bonds between mother and daughter in animals or even in the deep bonds I share with the dogs I love. I’d like my dear friends at CSNW to celebrate his life today. Here’s to the emotions and intelligence in ALL of us! Thank you Frans de Waal.”

Thank you, Kathleen, for sponsoring this First Day of Spring in memory of Dr. de Waal. The tribute on the Emory University website is highly recommended.

And thank you to whoever provided the photographs for this blog post.

One needs to go no further than these carefully chosen photos (thank you Katelyn!) of our dear friends to see that chimpanzees think, feel, and move through the world experiencing life very much the same way we do. Perhaps much better at times!

That photo of my Pal Willy B is exceptional.

The picture of Missy standing at Jody’s grave is heartbreaking and sweet. Lovely.

Heart felt thanks,Kathleen, for sponsoring this day in memory of Dr Frans de Waal. A truly fitting tribute to one of the most dedicated primatologists in the world. I have just finished reading his beautiful book “Mama’s Last Hug”and I know that Jan Van Hooff’s goodbye on video to Mama chimpanzee went viral. A truly gifted and sadly missed wonderful man. I also loved the photos of our sweet chimpanzees with a tender look at Jody’s grave. A very fitting gesture.
