Among the Tall Grass

It’s our favorite time of year when the grass is green and so tall that you can barely see the chimps!

However, with tall grass means patrolling for snakes becomes even more important (Missy and Annie looking for snakes in the morning which they did find one in later in the day):

Do you ever have rattle snakes enter the compound? If so, how do you deal with them? Can chimpanzees acquire heart worms? How about Lyme disease? Fleas? Any other pests you have to be aware of for the chimpanzees?
They have something on the outside of the fences that keeps rattlesnakes away (don’t know how that happens). I’ve wondered about ticks and things myself, but maybe grooming takes care of it.
Hi Connie! Yes we do have rattle snakes in this area. Linda is correct that we have rattlesnake fencing around the perimeter to prevent them from coming in. We think it works pretty well! As for heart-worms and Lyme disease we don’t have to worry too much about that. It isn’t really in our neck of the woods. We also haven’t had much trouble with ticks. The chimps groom each other a lot, which may help! I hope this helps 🙂
Annie doing her firehose calisthenics always cracks me up. The worry over those scary snakes sure does spoil a perfectly perfect day. Hope your weather holds for birthday and anniversary forages tomorrow!
I know, I also love seeing this “the floor is lava!” approach to the platforms, though the fact that she’s so petrified of them means her day isn’t care-free, so kind of sad, too.
