Some of the best grooming sessions happen in the afternoon, in the “siesta” time between lunch and dinner.

So wonderful to see these chimps grooming one another
doing what is natural as sunrise and sunset .
As time passes., they have become so engaged in natural chimpanzee behaviors, ,
Sanctuary life is the answer for ALL chimpanzees in labs,
the sooner we get them ALL to sanctuary’s.. the better !
I often wonder about HEIDI chimpanzee, one of Negra’s daughters, and where she s now,??
Q/JB do you know where HEIDI is and what will her future be?

Hi Rita – Heidi is at the Alamagordo Primate Facility in New Mexico. Her fate is up in the air, as she is one of many chimpanzees still owned by the federal government. The NIH has said that it plans to keep a colony of 50 chimpanzees and retire the rest into the federal sanctuary system, but at the moment there has been no decision about which chimpanzees will be retired, nor is there a timeline.

Great question RIta but this news saddens me. Poor Heidi. While I understand that NIH released 110 chimpanzees and retired them (at long last!) to chimp Haven, more needs to be done by NIH to retire and finically support all of their chimps. A timeline should be set, I guess I didn’t realize there was no timeline. Let’s hope Heidi will soon be fortunate like Negra and someday we will see a photo of Heidi grooming a dear friend.
