Jody and the Bamboo

Jody loves to harvest her own plants from Young’s Hill. In addition to a variety of wild plants that grow out there, we have planted several groves of bamboo generously donated by Provitro Biosciences. While Missy appreciates the bamboo for its climbing potential, Jody prefers to break off shoots and eat the leaves.
I snapped the following photos the other day when Jody brought this bamboo inside to enjoy.
And as I was typing this blog post, Jody dragged this giant piece of bamboo in from outside. Let’s hope the bamboo survives Jody’s love.

Plant more bamboo! How would they like a garden? Of greens!
We have a garden on the sanctuary grounds where we grow food for the chimps, but a garden on Young’s Hill wouldn’t last long. The chimps would decimate it pretty quickly. 😉
She is having such a good time.
Do they eat a diet like we do? Like veggies and fruits, but do they eat meats? What would they do with a hamburger ? Just wondering.
Their diet consists mainly of fresh fruits and veggies, with some nuts and seeds, and occasionally plants or flowers. We do not serve them meat or dairy products, though their “chow” (protein biscuits we offer with breakfast and lunch) contains some animal protein. Chimpanzees in the wild eat insects and sometimes hunt small mammals or monkeys, but overall meat makes up a very small portion of their diet (usually estimated to be around 2%).
What a wonderful group of photos. When they first arrived at the sanctuary, I never thought I would see the chimps with so many individual choices available to them! Just to think that bamboo is theirs for the picking on the hill makes my heart melt. They are so lucky to be in your care!
Wow, Its so very interesting to see just how different each chimp is . they all make their own choices yet given the same situations , tools, or options, I love how Jody chooses to break off a few branches of bamboo and then carry it indoors to eat it COMFORTABLY and in her fave, prone position, laying down and RELAXING. Whereas Missy prefers to CLIMB the tree, its so interesting indeed,
