Whole apple forage

Jamie really cleaned up in today’s breakfast forage. We put out whole apples and she was absolutely beside herself—carrying them around in hand and in foot. Thankfully the other chimps were able to get some as well—I posted photos of Annie, Burrito, and Missy on their Facebook pages. I saw Foxie and Jody with some too but couldn’t get a good photo. And Negra? Well, she was preoccupied with the peanuts that were scattered around. Not surprising at all 🙂

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Jamie so happy.

Look how happy she is!! Nothing but smiles. And I am so happy for her! An apple a day keeps the doldrums away…… and 5 apples is sheer joy!

I wonder if they would “bob” for apples in a pool of water? 🙂 Speaking of water…has the Sanctuary ever considered a water feature or pond for the hill and if so, do you think the chimps would play in it on a warm day?

Hi Chris, unfortunately chimps don’t really like water. They instinctually avoid it because their bones are dense and they are so muscular that they sink in water and they can drown, so I don’t think they would enjoy a pool.

In shallow amounts it’s not a problem and we have done some “bobbing” for food before, and the chimps found it pretty enriching! https://staging.chimpsnw.org/2010/05/accidental-enrichment/
