The sounds of breakfast

Not unlike humans, chimpanzees are very vocal prior to a meal but fairly mellow during the actual meal. Leading up to it there’s a lot of chatter—consisting of food grunts and food squeaks. And though the occasional word—I mean grunt—is uttered during the meal, mostly there’s just sounds of chewing. This is a sign that it’s a pretty good meal. Listen to the video below for some snippets from a typical breakfast at CSNW:

I very much enjoy serving breakfast to the seven. I find it ironic that we as humans don’t appreciate the sounds of enjoying a meal, the chewing out loud, the slurping, the chomping, the grunts of pleasure, the moans of goodness and yet the chimps enjoy their meal without the social boundaries we impose on ourselves.

What does Annie do? She seems to be the most quite in most things.

There’s a very distinct beat to Negra’s food squeak.
