Who We Are

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW) is located on 113 acres of farm and forested land in the Cascade Mountains. We are the only home for chimpanzees in the state of Washington. CSNW was founded to provide sanctuary for chimpanzees discarded from the entertainment, pet, and biomedical testing industries. We also care for a small family of rescued cows who provide grazing services in exchange for our affection. All of the chimpanzees at CSNW enjoy a rich social life in exciting indoor and outdoor environments where they have choices to make every day. They are looked after by experienced and dedicated caregivers. Each day brings new adventures, and we share their transformations and experiences on our daily blog with the incredible supporters who form the heart of the sanctuary.

Meet Our Family

Our Chimpanzee Family

The fifteen chimpanzees who currently reside at the sanctuary and Jody, who passed away in 2023, have taught us so much. We admire the resiliency of this species so close to us, yet so different at the same time. We love how unique each of the chimpanzees are. We delight in their personalities and quirks, and we celebrate their changes and growth over time. Our many years doing this work have taught us that chimpanzees do not belong in captivity. We envision a world where chimpanzee sanctuaries are no longer needed. In the meantime, we work together to give these remarkable and deserving beings the best life possible.

Our Cow Family

The current family of three rescued jersey cows – Betsy, Honey, and Meredith – have an unusual history. Betsy and Honey were bred to produce milk for human consumption but ended up being the stars of a reality television show, with Honey giving birth to Meredith during the filming. From there, they went to Farm Sanctuary’s Orland, CA shelter, where Betsy’s son Nutmeg was born. CSNW adopted all four from Farm Sanctuary in 2018. Gentle giant Nutmeg passed away in 2024 and we will always cherish the years we had with him.
