We had a nice relaxing day here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest!
Burrito was following Jody around a lot today (on the Hill, in the Playroom, and laid close by her side in the Greenhouse):
But Jody was still able to make sometime for herself:
Annie, Burrito, & Foxie all went off to venture out on the Hill. Everyone eventually went on a walk with Jamie, except Neggie who stayed in her nice warm bed:
Annie did quite a bit of solo walking on Young’s Hill (maybe taking in the nice view or the gentle breeze):
Afterwards Annie was so sleepy she could barely keep her eyes open:
Jamie was watching the volunteers clean the Playroom in the utmost comfort:
However, Jamie also became so sleepy she couldn’t keep her eyes open:

Being the boss can be exhausting work.
Sounds like a wonderful day for everyone. The photo of Jamie hugging her boot with her bed head made my day, thanks Kelsi.
i think about these precious beings and their ages. it is so rarely mentioned – not even from time-to-time. they are getting up there for chimps and so being tired, may we just say, has much to do with their ages as well. with all due respect. as a person who also follows “save the chimps” down in fort pierce, fl (as you are well aware), this topic often comes up. even some times giving us the chance to pay our last respects to individuals. I love this blog. however, it is not taboo to mention this topic.
Hi Lisa – Yes, the chimps are getting up there in age! I can’t think of any reason why we would try to hide that fact and I certainly hope we don’t come across that way. It’s actually a major reason why we are pushing so hard to expand and take in new chimps, knowing that some of our chimps will need to make new friends and family in the not-so-distant future when their current friends and family pass away.
Perhaps one reason why we don’t mention the behavioral effects of aging in this group very often is because they haven’t really shown any yet, at least compared to when they arrived ten years ago. In fact, some of the chimps are more active now than they were then!
You are right of course that older chimps are generally less active than younger chimps and some of our chimps will most likely show some physical and cognitive decline as they get older. But sometimes a nap is just a nap – it feels good to doze off after a big lunch 🙂
