Going through the photos from this month, I found some gems that hadn’t been posted of each of the chimpanzees. There seems to be a yellow theme going on. Do you have a favorite?

OH ANNIE, ANNIE, ANNIE hands down…that pic is perfection and it would be nice to see annie get her moment in the sun…

Last picture, the two of them running. No competition, just fun. The pink dots are a bit of a distraction, but who cares.

I have a question that I have been meaning to ask of all of you for ages…does Burrito ever try to have sex with any of the ladies?

    • Avatar Diana on November 30, 2015 at 4:36 pm

I’ve tried to answer this a few times, but it hasn’t gone through, so hopefully this one will work! There are three females that still cycle – Annie, Jamie, and Jody. Foxie and Missy had hysterectomies just before coming to the sanctuary due to (benign) uterine tumors, and Negra we’re not sure about – she may have also had a hysterectomy at some point in her past that is not reflected in her records.

Burrito has had a vasectomy, which is the same procedure as a human vasectomy. He is still “in tact” and full of hormones. When the ladies are at their full swell, indicating ovulation, Burrito pays a lot of attention to them, especially to Jody. He follows them around, often not letting Jody out of his sight until her swelling subsides.

You would think that mating would be an instinctual behavior, but most male captive chimpanzees I’ve known do not seem know what to do with their feelings except for taking care of themselves, so to speak. This is likely due to not being raised in a natural social environment where they were exposed to mating behavior.

Missy and Negra. Two beautiful girls.

I love them all. But for a photo contest, Sweet Annie takes 1st place!

    All of them! ????

Impossible for me to pick one. I love them all!

Look how very different each chimpanzee is from the other! How beautiful each one is, individually. How can you possibly choose a favorite?! But as you know, NEGRA melts my heart, oh how I love her. But I have to say this is a great mix of photos of Burrito (especially Bonus Burrito!), Annie, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy. Let’s just say I love them all! : ) No favorites allowed. ; )

Love them all but the one of Annie is my favorite.

They’re all great photos, but out of this group of pics I would have to choose, “Annie’s sweet face–it just made my heart melt.” Now, if I were to pick the photo that best represents CSNW it would be the obivous of how well the chimps are, mentally and physically, living at CSNW: Seeing two very strong and healthy adult chimps running freely (within their inclosure) without a care in the world (pink butts and all)!! “The perfect “ending” of a bad situation!” Thanks, CSNW for the great lives you’ve given those lovely 7 chimps!! Ps- I, too, want to know if Burrito ever “woo’s” the girls into “love, Chimp style?” Wink! Wink!

I think I read once that since they’re on birth control and due to Burrito’s upbringing in entertainment, he never really learned to be sexually-attracted, and I *think* the birth control keeps their pheromones in check so they don’t emit the signal that tells him they’re in estrus and ready to mate. If I’m not disremembering any of that and making it all up. ?

      • Avatar Diana on November 30, 2015 at 4:38 pm

See my answer above to Nancy B.’s question. None of the chimpanzees at CSNW are on birth control. I like your take on the “perfect ending” photo, Zarah!

Ah, cool. I read a lot from sanctuaries so that may have been someone else I remembered reading about. I know there are some, like Chimp Eden, that are forbidden by their government to breed, which makes total sense. Why would you want to bring another one into a band-aid situation? On the Huff post page I saw a LOT of comments to that effect regarding Foxie and her trolls. Women just couldn’t seem to understand it would be irresponsible to bring another one into a sanctuary situation just for the express purpose of making “us” feel better because we’re sad she doesn’t have a baby and couldn’t keep her others.

I’m glad I remembered it correctly that it isn’t instinctual for captive males, though. That really shocked me, especially since they’re so much like humans in nearly every other regard. Doesn’t seem to be a problem for human males! 😉

Thanks, Diana. (I wasn’t able to post for nearly a month recently, so I wonder what’s up with Word Press?)

Yes – good memory! It’s true that people don’t really stop to think about what it means to bring another life into captivity. I’m looking into the Wordpress issues. There’s always something :).

That photo of Annie in the sun is gorgeous! Burrito looks like he has had a nice shampoo and a blow out! He is so fluffy sometimes, I long to touch his hair. They are all equally beautiful and individual. Jamie looks like she has a mischievous grin standing on that chair.
