The ladies of mystery

The ladies of mystery…Annie, Jody, and Missy. We always intend to share the lives of each of the chimpanzees equally on the blog. But some of the chimpanzees have different feelings about being the subject in front of the camera (just like we do) and we always want to respect that and never invade their personal space uninvited.

If you’ve been following the blog for awhile you’ve probably seen that Missy (often with Annie right behind her) is always on the go and rarely sits still long enough to photograph. And Jody, who loves to relax in luxurious nests, is often tucked away just out of sight of the humans, especially in the winter time. But then, all of this speaks to the beauty of their lives in sanctuary. They always have a choice.

So while today two of the ladies of mystery still remain a mystery, I was able to recently capture one of them, the beautiful Annie:

Is there a notch in her ear? If so, why is it there?

      Hi Meg,

Yes, Annie does have a notch in her ear. She arrived with it and we don’t know if it’s from a fight or she was born with it.

What a treat to see such beautiful shots of Annie! She is a beauty queen, growth on ear included. We should rename her Cindy Crawford!

Isn’t Negra a Lady of Mystery too?! ; ) Love the way Annie is looking right at the camera. She is so lovely.

Beautiful face. Maybe she is getting more comfortable with the camera.

I read somewhere that Captive Chimps don’t like cameras because they remind them of the guns that killed

    their mothers.

      Hi Diane,

Thanks for your comments! We can never know what the chimpanzees are thinking, but the chimpanzees here don’t demonstrate fear of the camera, they just sometimes show less interest in having their photo taken than others (just like humans). I like to think of it as similar to someone popping into my living room, or looking in my windows with their camera as I’m relaxing. 🙂 Negra, Annie, and we believe Jody, were taken from the wild and the rest of the chimpanzees were born in captivity.
